PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball earned its first win of the Ivy League season with a dominant performance, beating Dartmouth 70-56 on Tuesday (Feb. 8).
Kyla Jones led all scorers with 21 points, reaching the 20-point mark for the second time this season. Jones filled up the box score for the Bears adding a career-high seven assists, matching her career-high with six steals and pulling down five rebounds.
Isabella Mauricio was second on the team with 19 points, going 4-for-8 from three-point range. Mauricio finished the game with three steals and three assists.
"It was a relief to get that first win," said Monique LeBlanc, Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball. "You know how hard the team is working and you see the strides they are making and you so badly want to see them validated by winning. We know how much a win means to a team's overall confidence and I am just really happy for them."
Brown (6-15, 1-8 Ivy) dominated Dartmouth (2-19, 1-8 Ivy) inside, holding a 34-20 advantage in points in the paint with most of the damage coming from Jones. Ashley Ducharme finished the game with nine points and Mya Murray totaled eight.
Murray and Amanda Latkany led Brown with seven rebounds each as Brown tightened up the rebounding margin from the first meeting against Dartmouth three days ago. The Bears were outrebounded by 14 in the first meeting and were only outrebounded by six in this game.
Both teams got off to a slow start out of the gate with Brown holding a 12-10 lead after the first quarter. Jones was responsible for seven of Browns first 12 points.
As the second quarter got underway, Brown turned up the defensive intensity and started to take control of the game. Up two with 6:11 left to play in the first half, Brown went on a 6-0 run with baskets from Jones, Grace Kirk and Ducharme. The lead blossomed to 15 on a Mauricio three as part of a 12-2 run. The Bears finished the second quarter with five steals and after shooting 28% from the floor in the first quarter, shot 56% in the second quarter to take a 36-20 lead into halftime.
"We started to let our defense fuel our offense more in the second quarter," said LeBlanc. "Getting more rebounds, getting steals and getting out in transition really helped us get some great shots early in the second quarter. That just motivated us to continue to play great team basketball the rest of the way."
Dartmouth cut the lead to 10 halfway through the third quarter but the Bears responded with back-to-back threes from Maddie Mullin and Mauricio to get the lead back to 16. Gianna Aiello hit a tough layup on the Bears next possession as the run continued. Aiello's next basket at the 2:24 mark gave Brown its largest lead of the night at 22 points.
Brown would keep the Big Green at bay in the fourth quarter, never letting the lead get to single digits on route to LeBlanc's first-career Ivy league win.
Overall, the Bears shot 45% from the field, despite shooting 28% in the first quarter. Brown shot 50% or better in each of the final three quarters.
