Women's basketball comeback falls just short against Cornell

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball overcame a 16-point deficit but fell short in its game against Cornell, falling to the Big Red 68-61.
Isabella Mauricio led the Bears with a career-high 25 points, hitting the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season. Mauricio hit five threes and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The freshman also finished the game with three rebounds and one steal.
Maddie Mullin was second on the team with 15 points and also hit five threes as Mullin and Mauricio hit all then of Brown's threes on the day. Kyla Jones was 5-for-8 from the free throw line for 13 points and added a team-high five assists and three steals.
Brown finished the game shooting 37.5% from the field and shot 41.7% from three for the game. The Bears also went 15-for-20 from the free throw line.
"We want to feel like we are improving everyday and, putting ourselves in a hole early, we didn't let that identify how we were going to play the rest of the game," said Monique LeBlanc, Elisabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball. "It was great to see our fight from the team and turn that deficit into a lead."
Mullin kept the Bears in the game early, scoring 12 points in the first half but Brown found itself down by 12 at the half. Cornell took a 16-point lead three minutes in to the third but Brown began its comeback after that.
Mauricio started the run with a three and hit a step back jumper to cut the lead to 11. After a basket by Cornell, another three from Mauricio made it a 10-point game. Brown forced a missed shot and two free throws by Ashley Ducharme cut the lead to eight. A steal by Mauricio led to a layup and after another Cornell turnover, Mauricio hit her third three of the run to cut the lead to three with 3:05 left.
Mauricio's 16th point of the quarter came on a three with less than a minute left that made the score 46-41 in favor of Cornell with ten minutes to play. Mauricio outscored Cornell 16-15 in the third quarter.
Cornell started the fourth with a basket but Mullin responded with a three. Kyla Jones then took over with a steal and two free throws to cut the lead to two. After another turnover, Jones layup tied the game at 48. Jones picked up another steal in Cornell's next possession and was fouled. The sophomore split her free throws but put Brown up 49-48. Jones picked up an offensive rebound on the Bears' next possession and added a layup to put Brown up by three.
Brown would go cold over the next few minutes and Cornell would find its way to the free throw line to climb back into the game. After cutting the lead to one, Cornell twice earned an offensive rebound on a missed free throw to score four-straight points from the line and take a three-point lead. Jones went 1-for-2 from the line in Brown's next possession but a three put Cornell back up five and the Big Red would close out the game from the line.
Brown struggled allowing offensive rebounds with Cornell holding a 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to a 15-6 advantage in second chance points.

Brown will hit the road next weekend with games at Princeton on Friday (Feb. 18) and Penn on Saturday (Feb. 19).
