MIAMI – Brown softball suffered two close defeats to kick off its season at the FIU Softball Classic on Friday (Feb. 25). The Bears fell to Drexel, 4-3, before dropping a tough 2-0 decision to South Dakota.
Kat Clum led all batters with three hits over the two games and three other Bears finished the day with two hits. Alexis Guevara collected two RBI for the day.
GAME 1 – DREXEL 4, BROWN 3
Brown rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at third but came up just short in the first game of the season in a 4-3 loss to Drexel. The Bears finished with seven hits, two of those coming from Guevara.
Drexel got on the board in the first but Brown quickly answered in the second. Katie O'Leary led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Lauren Innerst drilled one down the third base line and ended up at third but O'Leary was thrown out at the plate. After a groundout, Elayna Tsiouplis singled to right field bring home Innerst and tie the game.
Brown only got two base runners through the next three innings and Drexel took advantage scoring a run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Down three with three outs left, Meghan Gormley started the seventh with a single to left field. Tsiouplis reached on an error and a single by Clum loaded the bases. Brown's next two batters were retired but Guevara singled to right field to score two and pull Brown within one. Brown's rally would end on a groundout by Laurel Moody.
Innerst (0-1) picked up the loss in the circle, pitching three innings, allowing two runs and striking out two. Grace Ladd threw two innings in relief, allowing two runs and collecting three strikeouts. Jaiden Ditimus allowed just one hit in her lone inning of work.
GAME 2 – SOUTH DAKOTA 2, BROWN 0
Brown ran into an 8-2 South Dakota team in its second game of the day, falling 2-0 to the Coyotes. The Bears finished with six hits, two each from Clum and Leah Carey.
The Bears threatened in the first with Carey getting to second after a single and stolen base but nothing would come of it.
South Dakota got to starter Guevara in the third inning with back-to-back singles to start the inning. After a line drive that was snagged by Guevara, a double down the right field line scored the first run of the game but Guevara would get out of the inning without giving up any more runs.
Clum had a one-out single to start the third and moved to second on an error by South Dakota's catcher on a pickoff attempt. Clum moved to third with two outs after Carey singled but another groundout kept the Bears off the board.
South Dakota doubled its lead in the fifth but Brown responded with another great chance in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Gormley singled to left and moved to third on a double by Clum, forcing a pitching change. South Dakota's new pitcher got back-to-back groundouts right back to her to again keep Brown off the scoreboard.
The Bears would only get one more runner on base over the last two innings as South Dakota secured the win.
Guevara (0-1) takes the loss going five innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out three. Jodie Aguirre did not allow a baserunner over two innings of relief and struck out three batters.
