PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown gymnastics team posted a season-high 193.225 points on Sunday to take second place at the Rumble & Tumble quad meet against LIU, Rhode Island College and Southern Connecticut State. The event was held simultaneously with the Brown wrestling dual against Sacred Heart, which the Bears won 35-11.
Overall, Brown gymnasts tied or set 11 career personal-bests, including exhibitions, four of which came on floor, where the team scored 48.675 points, their highest total on any event all season. Sophomore McKenna Weiner posted career-bests in both of her events, and sophomore Angela Xing set two career-highs while competing in three events.
"I was extremely happy with the performance today," head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "We started off strong and kept the energy high the entire meet. In our last meet, floor was our weakest event, and we got back in the gym and worked hard and I was so proud to see that floor ended up being our highest scoring event today."
Freshman Julia Bedell and senior Mei Li Costa led the Bears to start the meet on vault, each scoring 9.750 to tie for fourth. Xing followed with a career-best 9.725, while junior Ella Poley tied her career-high at 9.650.
Next up on bars, Costa led the way for Brown by finishing second overall with a score of 9.875. Freshman Taylor Schulze posted a new career-high score of 9.800 to finish on the podium in third place, followed by Poley at 9.700 and a new career-best from sophomore Lauren McKeown of 9.550.
On beam, Schulze led the Bears with a third place performance at 9.775. Junior Lauren Lazaro posted the Bears next-highest score at 9.675, her highest of the season. Weiner posted the first of her two career-highs on the day with a score of 9.650.
The Bears saved their best for last with their performances on floor, where four athletes either tied or set new career-highs, and one tied their season-high. Weiner led the Bears in fourth place overall with a new career benchmark of 9.775. Senior Abby Walsh followed with a career-high 9.750, followed by Xing (career-high) and Bedell tying with 9.725 points each. Lazaro tied her season-high with a strong showing of 9.700.
"The team is really coming together and focusing on Ivies, fine-tuning all the details in every routine, as well as pushing each other to be better," Carver-Milne said. "I'm excited to see what we can do at Ivies next weekend, especially with the continued improvement that we've had every week."
Brown will now turn its attention to the Ivy Classic one week from today on Sunday, Feb. 27, which will be hosted by Yale starting at 1 p.m.
