PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball's five-game win streak came to an end with a 60-45 defeat to Holy Cross on Wednesday (Nov. 30).
Brown (5-3) struggled from the field against a very good Holy Cross (5-2) defense. The Bears shot just 27 percent from the floor and 19 percent from three for the game. Isabella Mauricio led Brown with 10 points and Beth Nelson was second on the team with seven.
The Bears defense held tough for most of the night against the Crusaders, holding Holy Cross to under 40 percent shooting and forcing 20 turnovers. Brown turned those 20 turnovers into a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Gianna Aiello led the way for Brown, matching her career-high with six steals. Aiello also added seven rebounds and two blocked shots on the night.
The biggest difference on the night came from the free throw line as Holy Cross was 15-for-18 from the stripe and Brown was just 3-for-7.
Holy Cross jumped out to an 11-2 lead and Brown was forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the game. The Bears cut the lead to four at the end of the first quarter after a three by Jones and a jumper made by Grace Arnolie.
Brown got the deficit to two to begin the second quarter and two more times after a three by Page Greenburg and a layup by Ada Anamekwe but each time Holy Cross had an answer and built the lead to seven at halftime.
A 12-2 run by Holy Cross started the second half before another three by Greenburg but Brown found itself down 12 to end the quarter after a three by Nelson with less than a minute left.
Down 12, Brown used a run with a three and a layup by Mauricio, capped with a free throw from Alyssa Moreland to cut Holy Cross's lead in half. Another three by Mauricio made it a five-point game and Brown looked to have momentum but a four-point play by Holy Cross in the next possession extinguished any comeback.
Holy Cross was led by Janelle Allen with 16 points and three other Crusaders finished in double-figures.
