HAMILTON, N.Y. – Mathieu Caron recorded a career-high 42 saves for the Bears, but the Colgate Raiders (5-7-1, 3-2-0 ECAC) struck in overtime to take a 3-2 home win over the Brown Bears (1-5-1, 1-5-1 ECAC) Friday at Class of 1965 Arena.
The Raiders struck first at 6:37 of the opening period as Matt Verboon ripped a shot from the slot past Caron to cap a transition goal after a quick Colgate breakout.
Noah Wakeford and Gavin Puskar broke for a 2-on-1 rush with five minutes remaining in the opening period, but Puskar's drive on net was stopped by Colgate netminder Carter Gylander (20 saves).
Ryan Bottrill scored his first collegiate goal 7:13 into the second period to tie the game at 1-1, striking just 24 seconds into a 5-on-3 advantage. Bottrill finished a feed from Luke Krys at the bottom of the circle not long after Colton Young and Brandon Pierson were both penalized for minor infractions.
Bradley Cocca gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with 3:04 remaining in the middle frame, ripping a shot past Gylander from the top of the right circle for his second of the year. Munro picked up the primary assist for his second of the night and Matt Sutton had the secondary assist for his third helper of the year.
The Bears killed the rest of a Krys minor to begin the third period and killed off a holding penalty against Brett Bliss early in the period to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Raiders tied the game with 10:20 remaining in the third period as Ben Raymond walked in from the top of the zone and beat Caron with a slot shot.
After a video review, Colgate's Arnaud Vachon was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct with 5:52 remaining in regulation with the game still tied at 2-2. Brown's extended power play was unable to find the game-winner as the teams went to overtime.
Colton Young scored the OT winner with 1:30 left on the clock after his breakaway chance was initially stopped by Caron, but the puck continued to trickle and crossed the line.
