Women's soccer downs Cornell in shutout victory
10/22/2022 8:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team took down Cornell 2-0 Saturday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field in the team's seventh shutout performance of the season. Brown moves to 10-2-2 on the year and 4-0-1 in Ivy action, while the Big Red fall to 2-7-5 and 0-3-2.
"We knew this game was going to be a battle," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I think a lot of times after playing Princeton, Harvard [in the middle of the season] you feel like you don't need the same momentum going into the last three games, but you actually need to be ramping it up and we talked a lot about that this week.
"I thought it was great that we got two goals from Ava and Lucinda. The shutout as well, that's been a goal of ours to finish these last three games with a shutout."
The Bears got on the board in the 24th minute of action when Brittany Raphino beat a defender to the end line and curled the ball back into the box. A defender attempted to clear, but it went straight to Ava Seelenfreund who wasted no time in hammering it home for her eighth goal of the season.
Although they put five more shots on goal in the first half, the Bears weren't able to add to their lead until the 76th minute.
Again, it was Raphino at the end line. This time, she sent a high ball back towards goal that Claire Myers was able to head down to the waiting feet of Lucinda Anderson who, with the goalie out of the way, was able to easily double the Bears' lead.
On the night, Brown outshot Cornell 19-3, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Corners were 11-3 in favor of the Bears.
Bella Schopp only had to make one save to pick up the shutout and her fifth win of the season.
With the victory, the Bears sit just four points away from claiming a third straight Ivy title with two league games remaining. Two victories would guarantee outright ownership of the Ivy crown for the Bears regardless of how the rest of league play unfolds for the other seven teams.
"I thought it was a good team performance," McNeill said. "Obviously, not done yet, but just one step closer to the goal."
Brown will travel to Penn next Saturday, Oct. 30 for a 2 p.m. matchup with the Quakers.
