Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision to Cornell Friday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (8-6, 1-4 Ivy League) suffered a 1-0 home conference loss against the Cornell Big Red (8-6, 3-2 Ivy League) Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.
Caroline Ramsey scored the afternoon's lone goal and preserved Cornell's lead with a defensive save late in the third quarter.
"I'm super proud of our performance today, we keep taking steps and getting better," said head coach Britt Broady. "I felt like we did a fabulous job sticking to our game plan and gave ourselves plenty of opportunities. We'll take another step forward on Sunday."
Ramsey put the Big Red ahead early with a penalty corner goal in the sixth minute with assists from Bridget Mahoney and Claire Jones.
Following the Cornell marker, neither team created any dangerous offensive opportunities for the remainder of the first quarter.
The Big Red were assessed two yellow cards in a 3:45 span late in the second quarter as Ramsey and Mahoney picked up the infractions. The Bears possessed the ball in Cornell's end for most of the frame, but were unable to get a shot through to Aerin Park.
After only two penalty corners in the opening half, the Bears created four corner chances in the third quarter. On the fourth corner of the frame, Lexi Pellegrino wired a shot from the top of the circle towards the corner of the net, but Ramsey batted the ball away to pick up her ninth defensive save of the season.
The Bears pressed in the fourth quarter but Mikayla Walsh was assessed a yellow card with 7:08 remaining after a Cornell defender ran her over in Brown's attacking circle. Despite the card, the Bears had several chances to tie the game.
With 2:02 remaining, Brown rifled the ball into the circle and Imogen Govan seemingly deflected the shot into the net to tie the game at 1-1. However, the officials ruled that the ball deflected off a Cornell defender, resulting in a Brown penalty corner.
The Big Red blocked a Lindsey Ross shot on the ensuing corner and cleared the ball to preserve the one-goal Ivy League win.
Brown returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 23) as they host the 13th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11-4, 3-1 ACC) at noon. Sunday's game will stream on ESPN+ and will broadcast and stream on NESN in New England.
