PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's hockey head coach Brendan Whittet '94 announced the addition of senior Samuli Niinisaari and junior Jordan Tonelli to the 2022-23 leadership group.
Niinisaari and Tonelli will serve as assistant captains alongside senior Luke Krys, who was announced as team captain last spring.
Krys will don the 'C' for the Bears as a senior defenseman in 2022-23 after serving as assistant captain a season ago. The Ridgefield, Connecticut native picked up Second Team All-Ivy honors in 2021-22 after leading the nation in blocked shots per game (3.23) and becoming the first Bear to record more than 100 blocks in a single season.
Defenseman Samuli Niinisaari, a Second Team All-Ivy and Academic All-Ivy selection a season ago, will don the 'A' as a senior. The Hamina, Finland native led the team in assists in 2021-22 and finished second on the team in blocked shots.
Rounding out the leadership group is junior Jordan Tonelli. In his first collegiate season in 2021-22, the Armonk, New York native skated in 26 games while chipping in three goals and five points. Tonelli moved to center halfway through the season and won more than 50% of his faceoffs.
The 2022-23 Bears open the campaign on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Yale before taking on the Bulldogs the following afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
Prior to the regular season opener in New Haven, Brown hosts Harvard in a scrimmage at Meehan on Thursday (Oct. 20) and takes part in the Ivy Jamboree at Yale on Saturday (Oct. 22).
