CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Brown gymnastics team capped off its trip to North Carolina by posting a score of 191.025 on Saturday in a quad meet against UNC, Missouri and George Washington.
Alyssa Gardner led the Bears on vault as part of a solid performance in three events. Addie Liebhardt led Brown on the beam and also had a strong showing on the floor. Freshman Julia Bedell made her collegiate debut and led the Bears on the floor and was second on vault.
Eighth-ranked Missouri won the meet with a score of 196.850, followed by the host Tar Heels (196.475) and George Washington (194.825).
"The team really came together," head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "We've had a great trip and getting everyone in the right mindset. Having a week off made them a little hungrier to get out on the competition floor. We were able to add higher difficulties to our routines and more depth, which really paid off."
Starting off on the floor, Bedell led the Bears with a score of 9.775, followed by Liebhardt with 9.625 and Abby Walsh 9.600.
Next up was the vault, where Gardner led the Bears with a score of 9.700. Bedell followed with a 9.600, senior Mei Li Costa posted a 9.525, and Lauren Kramer finished with a score of 9.500. Ella Poley also added a score of 9.325.
"Alyssa got back into her groove and really shined tonight," Carver-Milne said. "She was a rock star on three events.
"Ella came back from limited training and had an extremely dynamic routine that got the whole team excited," Carver-Milne said. "We're thrilled to have her back in the lineup."
Over on bars, Costa nailed a season-best 9.775 to lead Brown and place seventh overall. Poley competed for the first time this season on uneven bars, finishing with a score of 9.625. Making her collegiate debut, Paige Richter posted a 9.525 and Gardner finished with a mark of 9.350.
"Paige made her debut on bars and had a really solid competition," Carver-Milne said. This was her first time competing and she fought hard to make sure she hit for her team. We're proud of her for that."
Finishing the meet on beam, Liebhardt posted a season-best 9.700 to lead the Bears. Angela Xing followed with a strong showing at 9.650 points, McKenna Weiner posted a score of 9.600, and Taylor Schulze followed at 9.525 points.
"McKenna was originally slated to exhibition floor only," Carver-Milne said. "She ended up competing floor and beam for us and really came through for the team with some clutch performances."
"We have a much better mindset as a team and we're looking forward to our next competition back in front of our home fans," Carver-Milne said. "There was a lot of great energy in the arena today and we were going against some top teams and had our own section filled with parents and alumni. That really brought some positive energy for everyone."
The Bears will return north to host their home opener next Sunday, January 30 for a tri-meet against Bridgeport and Southern Connecticut State.
