
Brown Mourns the Passing of Former Student-Athlete Amanda Asay

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University Athletics mourns the passing of former student-athlete Amanda Asay. A beloved member of Brown's women's hockey and softball programs from 2006-10, Asay tragically passed away over the weekend following injuries during a skiing accident in her native Canada at the age of 33.
Asay appeared in 62 games from 2006-09 as a member of the Bears' women's hockey team was and a four-year member of the softball team, appearing in 98 games as a catcher and shortstop during her career.
A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Asay graduated from Brown with her bachelor's in 2010 and later returned to Canada and earned her masters and PhD in forestry from the University of British Columbia, playing two years on the Thunderbirds hockey team.
Most notably, Asay was a star on the baseball diamond and was the longest serving member of the Canadian women's baseball team, joining the program at age 17 in 2005. She earned all-tournament honors as a first baseman in her World Cup debut in 2006 and was named MVP of the 2016 World Cup in South Korea as a pitcher. She also helped Canada win the silver medal at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, the first time that women's baseball was included at the multi-sport games. Asay also helped the national team win five World Cup medals between 2006 and 2018. Most recently, she participated in the Women's National Team Showcase this past summer in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec. Asay was also a member of the Nelson Blueliners hockey team.
