PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown coed and women's sailing teams have found early-early season success in their first two weekends of competition. Highlights include sophomore Connor Nelson winning the NEISA Singlehanded Championship and the women's team finishing second at the Toni Deutsch Trophy.
"We are excited about the start of our fall season and our early results really show the strength and depth of our program," head coach John Mollicone said. "Our practices have been terrific and it is great to have the full team back and working hard every day to improve after a difficult 2020-2021 year."
In the preseason Sailing World College Rankings, the Brown women's team was ranked fifth in the nation, while the coed team was ranked seventh.
Competition began the weekend of Sept. 11 at the Pine Trophy, Harry Anderson Trophy, Bears Invite, and Toni Deutsch Trophy.
The Brown coed team competed at three of those events finishing third of eight at Pine, second of 18 at Harry Anderson, and had four top 10 finishes at the Bears Invite, including a fourth-place finish.
The women's team competed in just one event on the Sept. 11 weekend, taking second place out of 18 teams at Toni Deutsch. The Bears also had a boat finish 10th.
On the Sept. 18 weekend, both teams competed at the NEISA Singlehanded Championships, with coed also at the Hatch Brown Trophy and the women at the Regis Women's Trophy.
Connor Nelson won the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship out of 24 competitors. Leyton Borcherding also competed and finished fourth overall. Both Nelson and Borcherding qualified for the National Championship.
Coed also finished 10th and 15th at Hatch Brown, and the women took 12th at their Singlehanded Championship and 11th at Regis.
The Bears continue action this weekend at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl at Harvard, the Salt Pond Invite at URI, and the Sherman Hoyt Trophy at the Edgewood Yacht Club.
