SMITHFIELD, R.I. - For the second straight meet to open the season, both the Brown men's and women's cross country teams took home first place in their respective races on Saturday morning at the Nassaney Invitational on the campus of Bryant University.
Brown's men took the top spot with the team scoring 36 points to edge out second place Northeastern by one point. The women placed all five of their scorers in the top nine overall to finish with 29 points, seven ahead of second place Northeastern.
Individually, sophomore Evan Sherman finished first overall on the men's side for the second time in as many meets this season. Senior Emily Kompelien led the Brown pack for the second straight meet, finishing runner-up. Brown also received multiple contributions from underclassmen on both sides, which proved crucial in the team's wins.
Sherman completed the 5K race with a time of 15:02.1, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Freshman Miles Mullins placed fifth overall with a time of 15:23.2, senior Griffin McCauley placed seventh in 15:27.0, and grad student Ben McCoy rounded out the overall top 10 in 15:28.8. Junior Nate Price finished 13th overall to round out Brown's top five runners, while senior Jared Yabu (14th/15:32.1) and sophomore Jesse Edelstein (17th/15:39.1) completed Brown's top seven runners.
"Evan did a great job putting pressure on from the front again," distance coach Hannah Chappell-Dick said. "He has risen to each occasion we've given him. Miles finishing second for us was a huge performance for him definitely the first of many good efforts for our team. We're proud of him for stepping up and not being afraid to make a statement in his first college race.
"A margin of victory this small goes to show how important everyone top to bottom is and the best teams are the ones that are really strong towards the back end," Chappell-Dick said. "You can't give those spots away and they are critical to team success. It's great to see those people step up and contribute in a significant way."
On the women's side, Kompelien crossed the line in second place overall in 18:05.5, followed by senior Katherine Dokholyan (18:10.9) in fourth, sophomore Tevah Gevelber (18:19.4) in sixth and sophomore Katie Orchard (18:32.4) in eighth. Freshman Isolde McManus (18:38.4) finished in ninth overall, followed by freshman Maxine Montoya (11th/18:45.9) and senior Mary Bibbey (12th/18:52.1) to complete the team's top seven.
"Our underclassmen made great strides this race," Chappell-Dick said. Teva, Isolda, Maxine and Katie are the future of our program and it's great to see them taking on a slightly bigger race and seeing the results of that early in the season."
"We have a lot of strong senior leadership and impact newcomers which are the ingredients for a really exciting season," Chappell-Dick said.
The Bears will compete next on Friday, Sept. 24 at the Beantown Invitational, hosted by Boston College.
