BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown cross country programs took to the course at Franklin Park in Boston on Friday afternoon, facing off against multiple Ivy league foes as part of 20+ schools from across the nation, including several members of the ACC and SEC.
As a team, Brown's men finished 15th out of 20 teams while the women placed 17th out of 22.
Running the 8K distance for the first time in competition this season, senior Griffin McCauley led the Brown pack for the first time this season, finishing with a time of 25:34.7 to place 65th out of 167 finishers. Freshman Miles Mullins and senior Jared Yabu finished back-to-back with times of 26:01.6 and 26:03.9, respectively, while Nate Price finished in 26:12.3 and freshman Justin Hickey rounded out Brown's top five with a time of 27:03.3.
"Today was the first time seeing that quality of competition and it was a learning process to be back in that type of field and quality," distance coach Kurt Benninger said. "Some runners handled it well while others we'll look to have some more poise going, especially against a field with that type of depth."
On the women's side, Katherine Dokholyan led the Brown pack for the first time this season, crossing the line 46th out of 194 finishers with a time of 18:06.0, her fastest 5K time of the year. Sophomore Tevah Gevelber was the second Bear to cross the finish line in 18:47.5, followed by seniors Mary Bibbey (18:50.0), Emily Kompelien (18:50.8) and freshman Isolde McManus (18:51.2). Sophomore Katie Orchard followed close behind for a sixth-place team finish in 18:54.0, followed by Isa Stronski (19:16.1) to compete the team's top seven.
"Our women's pack finished close together, but we could have done a little better job of working together," Benninger said. "But it was good for them to be back in this type of field and it was an important step for them."
Brown also had several athletes compete in the co-ed Open Race, with junior Aaron Siff-Scherr finishing the 5K course in 16:18.7, good for an 11th place finish out of 127 runners. Sam Colton (22nd/16:27.2) and Henry Wood (27th/16:35.3) also competed for the men. Junior Emma Madgic (88th/19:37.6), sophomore Sarah Reichheld (99th/19:52.3), and Hailey Freedman (20:29.0) led the way from the Brown women in the open race.
Brown will return to Franklin Park for its next meet in two weeks on Saturday, October 9 with the New England XC Championships.
