Throughout the month of May, Brown Athletics will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Chie Chie (Sakuma) Yard '94, Women's Hockey
Surrounded by hockey since her youth, Chie Chie (Sakuma) Yard '94 came to Brown as a defender and helped lead the Bears to a first-place finish in the Ivy League as a senior. After receiving a dual degree in anthropology and business management, Yard went on to play four years for the Japan National Team and the Iwakura Peregine, a team in the women's professional league in Japan. In 1998, she represented Japan at the Nagano Winter Olympics. Yard's continued passion for the sport led her to the National Hockey League (NHL) as an intern. She progressed through the ranks and is currently the NHL's Vice President of Events, working with events such as the Stanley Cup Final, NHL All-Star Game, the Global Series European games and, most recently, the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe. In 2018, Yard was selected as a part of Sports Business Journal's eighth annual class of Game Changers.
