CRANSTON, R.I. – Brown University sailing topped Tufts University with an undefeated record from Bears 1 on Friday afternoon on Narragansett Bay out of the Ted Turner '60 Sailing Pavilion and Edgewood Yacht Club as the Bears opened their final weekend of racing prior to the national championships.
Sailing in Flying Juniors (FJs) in their second home regatta of the season, the Bears top entry took first place behind a 9-0 record in a 3-on-3 team race regatta format against a Tufts team that has qualified for both the women's and team race national championships.
Bears 1 took the regatta with its 9-0 mark while Jumbos 1 and Jumbos 2 came in second and third with records of 4-5 and 3-6 respectively. Bears 2 rounded out the field with a 2-7 mark.
For Bears 1, juniors Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.), and Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) represented Brown as skippers while senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) and juniors Emma Montgomery (Winthrop, Mass.), Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.), and Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.) competed as crews.
In Bears 2, senior Elizabeth Rolfes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and sophomores Hunter Zonnenberg (Marblehead, Mass.) and Caroline Bayless (Annapolis, Md.) competed as skippers while senior Catherine McClenahan (Buffalo, N.Y.), junior Mo Liu (Beijing, China), and sophomore Nora Ong (Saunderstown, R.I.) acted as crews.
As part of an impressive spring in its first season as a varsity program and following a 13-month hiatus from competition, Brown won the New England Women's Championship (Apr. 17) and the New England Coed Championship (Apr. 18) before placing third at the New England Team Race Championship (Apr. 25). Based on those results, the Bears qualified for all three spring college sailing national championships.
Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships. The ICSA Women's National Championship is May 19-20, the ICSA Team Race National Championship is June 2-3, and the ICSA Coed National Championship is June 7-8. All three championships will take place in Annapolis, Md.
Next, Brown closes the weekend at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with Tufts tomorrow – Saturday, May 15 – at 1:00 p.m. in a 20-boat fleet race regatta.

1. Bears 1: 9-0
2. Jumbos 1: 4-5
3. Jumbos 2: 3-6
