NEW LONDON, Conn. – Brown University sailing took the top spot at the Coast Guard Invite on Saturday afternoon on the Thames River as Brown competed in its second regatta of the weekend and final event before the ICSA National Championships begin on Wednesday.
Â
Sailing in Z420s, Brown fielded six boats in the 20-boat fleet race regatta with the host U.S. Coast Guard Academy entering 10 boats and Tufts University adding four boats.
Â
The Bears captured first place with a score of 31, edging USCGA's top entry on a tiebreaker. Brown's other entries placed third (32), fifth (55), 11th (79), 15th (90), and 16th (97). Five other Coast Guard boats alongside one entry from Tufts rounded out the top 10.
Â
Brown's top entry finished in the top six in all seven races while the Bears third boat claimed first place in races two, four, and five.
Â
For Brown, junior Olivia Belda (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior Annabelle Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md.) competed in Bears 1, sophomore Caroline Bayless (Annapolis, Md.) and junior Madeleine Montagner (Boston, Mass.) were in Bears 2, and juniors Jack Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) and Maddy McGrath (San Diego, Calif.) raced with Bears 3.
Â
Juniors Tucker Weed (Miami, Fla.) and Emma Montgomery (Wintrop, Mass.) competed in Bears 4, sophomore Hunter Zonnenberg (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Catherine McClenahan (Buffalo, N.Y.) were in Bears 5, and senior Elizabeth Rolfes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and sophomore Nora Ong (Saunderstown, R.I.) were in Bears 6.
Â
Earlier this weekend, Brown defeated Tufts on Friday in a home team race regatta behind an undefeated 9-0 record from Bears 1.
Â
As part of an impressive spring in its first season as a varsity program and following a 13-month hiatus from competition, Brown won the New England Women's Championship (Apr. 17) and the New England Coed Championship (Apr. 18) before placing third at the New England Team Race Championship (Apr. 25). Based on those results, the Bears qualified for all three spring college sailing national championships.
Â
Brown and Boston College are the only two teams in the NEISA to qualify for all three (women's, coed, team race) spring college sailing national championships. The ICSA Women's National Championship is May 19-20, the ICSA Team Race National Championship is June 2-3, and the ICSA Coed National Championship is June 7-8. All three championships will take place in Annapolis, Md.
