WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown University men's crew swept past host Holy Cross and Trinity College in the first, second, and third varsity eight as the Bears returned to competition for the first time in 518 days in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at Lake Quinsigamond.
"It was really wonderful just to see the teams out competing again," Brown head coach Paul Cooke said. "I was happy to see all the oarsmen racing and grateful to have the seniors, who have stuck in there for so long, back on the racecourse."
In a race rescheduled from April 10, the Bears took all three events, competing for the first time since the Tail of the Charles on November 16, 2019 – a span of 518 days – and racing for the first time in the spring season since the IRA National Championships on June 2, 2019 – a span of 685 days.
"I'd like to thank all of the people who worked hard to get the racing back underway, especially Colin Sullivan, who has been tireless," Cooke said. "I really appreciate the work by the organizers and our coaching staff."
Opening the day with the first varsity eight, Brown won the race with a time of 5:50.8 topping second-place Trinity (5:58.4) by 7.6 seconds and third-place Holy Cross (6:00.8) by 10.0 seconds.
In the second varsity eight, the Bears took the race behind a time of 5:57.0 beating the Crusaders (6:12.4) by 15.4 seconds and the Bantams (6:28.1) by 31.1 seconds.
Closing the day with the third varsity eight, Brown captured the event in a time of 6:09.5, eclipsing Holy Cross (6:19.2) by 9.7 seconds and Trinity (6:24.1) by 14.6 seconds.
"The performance by the entire team was strong," Cooke said. "All the crews were able to find good strokes together. We have a lot to build on."
In Brown's last full season of racing in 2018-19, the Bears finished third in the first varsity eight and fourth as a team at the Eastern Sprints before placing seventh in the first varsity eight and sixth as a team at the IRA National Championships.
