PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's crew fell to Northeastern University in its home opener on Saturday morning on the Seekonk River in its first home race since April 20, 2019 – a span of 749 days.
"We were fortunate to race against Northeastern today and to test ourselves against a strong, experienced opponent as part of our preparation for the IRA," Brown head coach Paul Cooke said.
Racing for the Dreissigacker Cup, the Bears dropped decisions to the Huskies in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight. In the latest IRCA Men's Heavyweight First Varsity Eight Rankings entering the weekend, Northeastern ranks at No. 5 while Brown stands at No. 8.
"All of our crews can be more composed and do a better job of applying power and keeping our poise, but I'm impressed by how far we have come and confident that our team will get faster," Cooke said. "Most of all, it's terrific for all of our athletes to be back in the arena of competition and striving to become champions. I have a lot of faith in them."
Opening the day with the first varsity eight, Brown came in with a time of 5:38.54, falling to Northeastern (5:32.76) by 5.78 seconds.
In the second varsity eight, the Bears clocked a time of 5:39.38, finishing 5.19 seconds behind the Huskies (5:34.19).
Closing the morning with the third varsity eight, Brown finished at 5:47.26, trailing Northeastern (5:38.05) by 9.21 seconds.
The race marked the Bears' second event of the season. Earlier this year, Brown topped both Holy Cross and Trinity on April 17 in Worcester, Mass., in its season opener and its first race in 518 days.
Next, Brown will race at Boston University for the Michalson Cup on Saturday, May 15 in its regular season finale. The 2021 IRA National Championships will take place May 28-29 in West Windsor, N.J.
