PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of men's hockey great Bob Wheeler '52, who passed away on April 13, 2021.
Wheeler was an integral part of the renaissance of Brown hockey under Wes Moulton '31, culminating in a Final Four appearance in 1951. Wheeler was a phenomenal scorer, and now, seven decades later, still holds the Brown record for goals in a game (eight), goals in a season (36), and career goals (86). In addition, he had 12 career game-winning goals and 10 career hat tricks. Wheeler did all this in just three varsity seasons (freshmen were not eligible for varsity play in that era).
An All-American in 1952, Wheeler was also awarded numerous league honors. In 1952 he was named Most Valuable Player and received First Team All-Pentagonal League laurels. Wheeler was also named to the First Team in 1951 and received Second Team accolades in 1950.
In addition to ranking first in the Brown record book for goals in a season and career goals, Wheeler ranks fourth in points (149) and is tied for 17th in assists (63). Supplementary for season honors, Wheeler holds the third highest mark in program history with 33 goals (1950-51) while his 54 points (36-18) in 1951-52 are fifth best for a single campaign.
In 1971, Wheeler was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame. He also competed for the Brown baseball team where he was a third baseman.
