PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three Brown pitchers combined for a shutout, and senior Katie O'Leary hit an RBI triple as Brown University softball beat Johnson & Wales University, 2-0, in its season and home opener on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears (1-0) – playing in their first game since March 1, 2020 (a span of 406 days) and their first home game since May 1, 2019 (a span of 711 days) – tallied two runs in the bottom of the first and did not allow the Wildcats (12-1) to score over the course of the seven frames.
In the circle, the Bears' pitchers combined to allow no runs on six hits with eight strikeouts to just two walks over 7.0 innings. The trio also added two hits at the plate.
Sophomore Erin Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) made the start, tossing 2.0 innings with three strikeouts and three hits. Freshman Jodie Aguirre (Alvin, Texas) came on in relief, throwing 3.0 innings and permitting just one hit with three strikeouts in the win (1-0). Junior Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) closed out the game, striking out two and giving up two hits in the save (1).
At the plate, sophomore Nicole Kim (San Diego, Calif.) reached base three times with a hit and two walks, tacking on a run scored. O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) posted a run scored alongside her RBI triple. Aguirre, Innerst, and freshman Dara English (Redondo Beach, Calif.) each notched one hit.
Prior to the game, the Bears held a senior ceremony honoring the Brown softball Class of 2021 – O'Leary and fellow senior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) – for their hard work and dedication to the team over the last four years.
In the bottom of the first, Kim led off the inning with a walk before putting herself into scoring position with a stolen base. O'Leary then drove a triple to left center field to bring home Kim. After freshman Moe Kastens (Edwardsville, Ill.) walked to put runners on first and third with two outs, O'Leary came home on a double steal to give the Bears' their 2-0 edge.
Head coach Kate Refsnyder worked all 15 available Bears into the game with the team's four available freshmen – Aguirre, English, Kastens, and Jayme Gross (Orland Park, Ill.) – making their collegiate debuts.
Those four freshmen alongside five sophomores – Elgas, Kim, Meghan Gormley (North Kingstown, R.I.), Julia Gubner (Calabasas, Calif.), and Jadey Hagiwara (Honolulu, Hawaii) – and junior Kat Clum (Fort Worth, Texas) all made their home debuts at the Brown Softball Field.
For Johnson & Wales, Sage Borkowski threw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief while Summer Ramundo tossed 3.0 innings with two runs allowed in the loss (6-1).
