Throughout the month of February, Brown Athletics will celebrate Black History Month through a series of profiles. Over the course of the month, the Bears will recognize African Americans who have made an impact on the university community and beyond.
Joe Carter 1923, Men's Track & Field, Football
Joseph Fredrick Starr Carter, Brown Class of 1923, competed on both the men's track & field and football teams for three years. He stood out with his speed and was a back-to-back New England Outdoor Champion in 1921 and 1922 in the 100-yard dash. When discussing Carter's speed, the 1924 Liber Brunensis (Brown's yearbook) wrote, "Needless to say, very fast." In football, the Liber Brunensis noted that he was known to beat out many defensive backs in a footrace and that those defensive backs "saw only his heels and a cloud of dust." A native of Asbury Park, N.J., Carter enjoyed going to the theatre in his spare time. Following his stay on College Hill, Carter attended Howard Medical School in 1924 and was on the school's football team that year. After medical school he worked in Harlem, N.Y. as a physician.
