Brown downed by Providence, 59-43

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball fell to Providence, 59-43 on Wednesday (Dec. 8) as the middle of the game got away from the Bears in the loss.
Isabella Mauricio was the leading scorer for Brown (3-7) with 12 points. Amandy Latkany was second on the team with eight points and Kyla Jones finished the game with seven. Brown struggled from the field against Providence (5-5), shooting just 27 percent from the floor and 16 percent from three-point range.
Brown won the turnover margin 20-10, forcing 14 steals on the night. Maddie Mullin led the team with five steals and Jones had three. Mya Murray finished the game with a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Bears got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 17-11 lead thanks in part to strong defense. Brown had four steals and three blocks in the first ten minutes and scored nine points off turnovers. Brown went up 10-5 after a three by Mauricio and a steal and layup from Jones. Another three by Mauricio and a driving layup by Dani Short gave Brown its largest lead of the game.
From that point, Providence would outscore Brown 10-0 the rest of the quarter, taking a 21-17 lead after the first ten minutes of play.
Over the next two quarters, Providence took control of the game, outscoring Brown 30-12. The Bears were held to six points in both the second and third quarters, going 0-for-12 during that stretch. Brown was held scoreless by the Friars in a stretch that lasted nine minutes between the second and third quarters.
The Bears outscored Providence 14-8 in the final quarter with Brown holding the Friars to just 21 percent shooting. Ashley Ducharme and Gianna Aiello both got on the board during the final quarter of play for Brown.
Providence was led by Alyssa Geary and Janai Crooms who each scored 14 points. Crooms also finished the game with 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Brown will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11 with a game against Fisher College. The game will take place at the Pizzitola Sports Center at 2 p.m.
