WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown earned a hard-fought win with a 57-55 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday (Dec. 5). The Bears finished with three players in double-figures in the win.
Brown (3-6) was led by Amanda Latkany who scored a career-high 15 points and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Latkany also pulled down seven rebounds. Charlotte Jewell finished the game with 13 points, a career-high and team-leading nine rebounds and a team-best four assists. Kyla Jones added 12 points and a team-high four steals.
Brown's defense gave Holy Cross fits as the Bears held Holy Cross to just 34 percent shooting, its lowest mark of the season. Brown also forced 18 turnovers, including 11 steals, that led to 15 points.
"We know that we have to count on our defense," said head coach Monique LeBlanc. "It was great to see our team take on that identity to beat a good Holy Cross squad. It is something we are going to have to keep doing as we move forward."
The Bears got off to a hot start to begin the game, jumping out to a 14-2 lead, using a suffocating defense. Tied a two, Latkany hit a three to start the run. Jones picked up a steal and took it the length of the court for a layup to go up 7-2. After another Holy Cross turnover, Mauricio hit a three. Mya Murray picked up a block that led to a transition layup for Mauricio and forced a timeout.
The Bears continued to keep Holy Cross off the board with a layup from Jones and a three by Jewell pushing the lead to 17-2. The scoreless streak for Holy Cross lasted 6:45 before a basket with just over two minutes left in the quarter made the score 17-4. Brown maintained the lead, taking a 19-10 advantage into quarter two.
Quarter two saw Holy Cross climb back in to the game as Brown went cold during the middle of the quarter. The Crusaders tied the game at 28 with a three-point play with just over a minute left in the half. Jones responded with a layup and after a miss by Holy Cross, Jewell tipped in a miss at the buzzer to put Brown ahead 32-28.
The second half started out back-and-forth with Brown jumping ahead by seven after two free throws from Latkany and a three by Jewell. Holy Cross cut the lead to three but Jewell responded with another jumper. After the Crusaders again cut the lead to a one-score game, Maddie Mullin ended the quarter with a buzzer-beating three to put Brown up 46-40 with one quarter to go.
Layups by Latkany and Jones put Brown up 50-42 but an 8-0 run by Holy Cross tied the game with just over five minutes remaining. Short ended the run with a driving layup, giving the Bears a 52-50 lead. Holy Cross responded with a basket but Latkany again put the Bears on top with two free throws.
As both teams went cold over the next two minutes, Brown got a free throw by Jewell with 21 seconds to put the Bears up by three. On Holy Cross's next possession, Avery LaBarbera hit a three to tie the game with seven seconds on the clock after an offensive rebound.
The Bears drew up a play that got Latkany driving to the rim and she was fouled with two seconds on the clock. Latkany stepped to the line and drilled both free throws to put the Bears back up two. Holy Cross got the ball to LaBarbera on the inbounds pass but her three was off the back of the rim to end the game.
Brown will return home for a game against Providence on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The game at the Pizzitola Sports Center will begin at 6 p.m.
