Sydney Cummings becomes first Bear selected in NWSL Draft

Sydney Cummings '21 was selected by Racing Louisville FC with the 42nd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2022 National Women's Soccer League Draft. Cummings is the first alum of the Brown women's soccer program to be drafted into the NWSL.
"I feel incredibly thankful to Racing Louisville FC for giving me this opportunity," Cummings said. "I'm excited for the chance to compete at the next level and be a part of an organization that cares about its players and stands for something bigger than itself. I can't thank my family enough for everything they've done to help me get to this point in my career.
"I'm also so grateful to my coaches and teammates at Brown for the impact they've had on me as a player. Coming in as a freshman and being part of a new era for BWS made me grow as a player and person. Without them, I wouldn't have been able to continue my carer at Georgetown. This is just the beginning. I'm so excited to get started in Louisville."
Cummings was named a Second Team All-American following her junior season at Brown in 2019. She was also a three-time All-Region and All-Ivy selection, earning Second Team All-Ivy honors both her freshman and sophomore seasons before being named to the First Team as a junior.
As a junior in 2019, the Millstone Township, N.J. native helped the Bears set a single-season program record for wins (14), home wins (11), and shutouts (13). She played a huge role on the Brown defense that ranked second in the NCAA in goals allowed (eight), third in save percentage (.890), and fourth in goals against average (.40).
Cummings started all 52 games she played as a Bear and posted two goals and eight assists in her career. In 2019, she had a team-high seven assists as she helped lead the Bears to their first Ivy Title since 1994.
With her senior season canceled due to COVID-19, Cummings transferred to Georgetown to use her final year of eligibility as a grad student in 2021. She started all 22 games for the Hoyas, scored a career-high five goals, and helped lead them to a 14-2-6 overall record, a BIG EAST Tournament Championship, and into the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
