Mauricio scores 20 in Bears loss to North Dakota

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Isabella Mauricio scored in double figures for the third-straight game but Brown fell to North Dakota 65-46 in the consolation game of the TD Bank Classic on Sunday (Nov 28).
Mauricio led the team with 20 points, the first 20-point effort of her career. Mauricio went 7--for-16 from the field and 4-for-8 from three-point range. Kyla Jones was second on the team with seven points. Chantal Nadia and Charlotte Jewell each scored six.
The Bears struggled again from the field, shooting just 26.6 percent (17-64) from the floor and 27 percent (6-22) from three. North Dakota finished the game at 40 percent from the floor and 43 percent from deep.
Amanda Latkany led Brown with seven rebounds and three steals. Jones and Nadia each finished the game with four rebounds and Dani Short pulled down five.
Brown's defense forced 17 turnovers and nine steals. After Latkany, Mauricio, Jewell and Mullin each had two.
The Bears did not have an answer for North Dakota's inside presence, as the Fighting Hawks outscored Brown 30-10 in the paint.
Brown jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after Mauricio scored five quick points and after two free throws from Jones, the Bears were up 9-2. North Dakota responded with a 9-0 run but Maddie Mullin stopped the run with a three. Brown managed just one more point the rest of the quarter as North Dakota built its lead to 21-13 after one quarter.
The Bears drought continued until Jones hit a layup with 5:28 on the clock, making the score 24-15. Dani Short's jumper answered a North Dakota three on the next Brown possession. Mauricio's three and a layup from Chantal Nadia cut the lead to seven with less than three minutes left in the half. North Dakota jumped ahead with an 8-0 run before Mauricio hit a layup but the Fighting Hawks led 39-24 at the break.
The second half started with a Mauricio three and a jumper from Nadia to cut the deficit to 10 but used a 9-2 run over 3:35 during the middle of the quarter to push its lead to 18. Mullin hit a three and Mauricio hit another jumper to end the run but North Dakota kept the lead at 15 heading into the final quarter.
Mauricio's three in the fourth quarter cut North Dakota's lead to 16 but the Bears were not able to get any closer.
Brown will return home for a matchup against New Hampshire on Wednesday (Dec. 1) at 6 p.m. in the Pizzitola Sports Center.
