Late Flurry Comes up Short as Bears Fall 1-0 to Merrimack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team put eight shots on goal over the final 1:51 of regulation, but was unable to find the back of the net, resulting in a 1-0 loss to Merrimack in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Bears (1-9-2, 1-6-1 ECAC) put a season-high 31 shots on goal in the game, 16 of which came in the third period, when they outshot Merrimack 16-4.
- Brown also allowed a season-low 27 shots on net.
- Brown was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Merrimack went 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.
- Brown held a 22-21 edge in faceoffs.
- Freshman defenseman Cameron Sikich led the Bears with six shots while freshman forward Anna Hurd added five. Sophomore Kaley Doyle made 26 saves in goal for Brown.
- Merrimack (5-11-1, 4-7-1 Hockey East) outshot the Bears 12-5 through the opening 20 minutes as neither team cracked the scoreboard. Both teams came up empty on three combined power play chances.
- Doyle made two huge saves from point-blank range right in front after a centering pass at 7:41 of the second to keep the game scoreless.
- Merrimack struck first exactly at the midpoint of the second period on the power play off a slapshot from the blue line that found its way top shelf to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
- Meadow Carmen nearly tied it by drilling the post with a shot in the closing seconds of the period, keeping it 1-0 Warriors through two. Merrimack outshot Brown by an 11-10 margin in the second period.
- Brown upped the tempo to start the third period, rattling off the first eight shots on goal over the first nine minutes of the period, but was unable to find the back of the net.
- Merrimack was able to kill off two Brown power plays in the third period, including one that came at the 16:35 mark.
- Brown had a flurry of chances in the closing minutes of regulation, including eight shots on goal over the final two minutes, the last 1:28 of which was played with the net empty, but was unable to score.
The Bears will return to action this Saturday at home for a showdown against crosstown rival Providence College for the Mayor's Cup. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ starting at 2 p.m.
