
Cold shooting dooms Bears in loss to Sacred Heart, 71-46

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Brown got off to a cold start, falling behind early to Sacred Heart in a 71-46 loss on Sunday (Nov. 14). Isabella Mauricio led the way for the Bears with 12 points.
Mauricio reached double figures for the first time in her career but Brown (0-2) had a head time early cracking Sacred Heart's (2-0) defense. The Bears finished at 28 percent from the floor and were 3-for-28 from deep. Mauricio finished with all three threes for the Bears.
Kayla Jones was second on the team with nine points going 3-for-4 from the free throw line. In total, Brown was able to get to the line 26 times but only hit 13. Amanda Latkany and Mya Murray finished the game with six points each and Grace Kirk and Dani Short each added four.
Latkany led Brown with nine rebounds, Murray finished with seven and Chantal Nadia had six. Jones finished the game with five rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Brown's offense struggled to get things going early, falling behind 11-1 at the media timeout of the first quarter. The Bears first basket came with 2:27 left in the quarter as Mauricio hit a layup to make the score 11-4. Kirk hit a jumper with just over a minute left as Brown trailed 13-6 after one.
Nadia and Latkany each scored in the paint midway through the second quarter to cut the lead for Sacred Heart to 20-12. Jones and Latkany would get buckets late in the quarter but the Bears were down 27-16 at the break.
Sacred Heart took control of the game early in the third quarter as the Pioneers held Brown scoreless for the first 5:41 of the quarter. Dani Short's layup ended the run with the score 41-18. Latkany hit a layup and Short hit two free throws as the Bears tried to climb back in to the game. Jones hit another layup but Sacred Heart pushed its lead to 25 to end the quarter.
Mauricio's three with 8:41 left in the game was Brown's first make from behind the arc. Mauricio caught fire for the Bears hitting two more threes and a fastbreak layup by Jones cut the lead to 16 and forced a timeout.
Brown used a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 13 with a layup and two free throws by Jones but Sacred Heart kept the Bears at bay.
Sonia Smith led the way for Sacred Heart with 22 points. The Pioneers shot 38 percent from the floor and were 20-of-25 from the free throw line.
Brown will play its next game back in the Ocean State but will stay on the road, traveling to Bryant on Tuesday (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m.
