SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Brown women's basketball picked up its first win of the season with a hard-fought 63-60 win over Bryant on Tuesday night (Nov. 16). The Bears had three players finish in double-figures in the victory.
Brown (1-2) was led by Kyla Jones with 16 points. Isabella Mauricio finished the game with 14 points and Charlotte Jewell added 12. Amanda Latkany and Grace Kirk each scored eight points.
"It was really important to get this win tonight," said Jones. "After all the work we have been putting in it feels great to get this one."
After finishing with just two assists against Sacred Heart, Brown handed out 10 assists as a team tonight. Mauricio led the way with three. Jones, Kirk and Mya Mrray each finished the game with two.
"I thought our composure was good down the stretch, I thought we scored some key buckets and the players did a great job on the boards," said head coach Monique LeBlanc, who earned her first win as Brown's head coach. "You always want a nice comfortable win but when you get into games like these it's nice to see the team come through and we can now take that experience forward."
Active defense played a big role in the win for the Bears. Brown finished the game with 15 steals. Four steals came from Jones, while Murray Latkany and Kirk each finished with three. In total, Brown forced 25 turnovers from Bryant, turning those in to 25 points.
"We can really get a lot of offense out of our defense and that was something we focused on today," said Jones. "We just wanted to fly around in be in everyone's face and that was something that really helped our offense."
The defense started things off quickly for the Bears as Brown jumped out to a 19-12 lead after the first quarter. Brown forced 11 turnovers, including nine steals in the first ten minutes of the game leading to multiple transition layups. Kirk had a 5-0 run of her own with a layup and a three to put the Bears up 19-10 during the quarter.
Brown pushed its lead to 10 three minutes in to the second quarter after a jumper by Mauricio and another from Latkany off a steal by Jewell. Late in the quarter, Jewell gave Brown another 10-point lead with a floater but two late threes by Bryant cut Brown's lead to 31-27 at the half.
A cold spell of about four minutes allowed Bryant to take the lead at 36-35 in the third quarter but Jones responded with a steal and a layup to put Brown back on top. After Jones put Brown up 41-38, Bryant went on an 8-0 run in the next two minutes before Murray hit a three with nine second left in the quarter, making the score 46-44 in favor of Bryant heading into the final frame.
Bryant started the quarter with a three-point play but a 7-0 run by the Bears flipped the scoreboard. Mauricio started the run with a three and Jones added a layup to tie the game. Jewell hit two free throws to put the Bears back up 51-49. After Bryant retook the lead, Kirk made a tough layup and drew the foul on a nice back cut to put Brown back up two.
The game continued to go back-and-forth with Mauricio responding to a Bryant bucket as the shot clock expired with a three to put the Bears up 59-58. Bryant came right back down the court and got a basket from Juliette Golden, who scored the Bulldogs' last six points to retake a one-point lead.
With just over one minute remaining in the game, the ball ended up in Jones' hands as she made a driving layup to put Brown back up 61-60. A missed three by Bryant was rebounded by Jewell, who sunk two free throws to increase the lead to three. On Bryant's next possession, Latkany came up with a big block on a three-point attempt but the ball went out of bounds to the Bulldogs with three seconds left. Brown's defense remained tough and forced an off balance shot by Bryant that came off the rim to end the game.
Brown will take the court next on Thursday, November 18, for the Bears home opener against Central Connecticut State. Tip off at the Pizzitola Sports Center is set for 6 p.m.
