NEW YORK, N.Y. – Brown recorded its third consecutive shutout to claim a 1-0 Ivy League conference win over Columbia Saturday in New York.
The Bears improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Columbia drops to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
"It was a real battle today; I'm proud of the way our team fought," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We had a nice defensive stand when Columbia made an offensive push in the fourth quarter."
Danielle van Rootselaar gave Brown the early lead a little more than halfway through the opening quarter. The senior cut through the heart of the Columbia defense and ripped a far-side shot past Lion goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes (1 save).
Van Rootselaar's goal marked her ninth of the season and pushed her point streak to seven games.
Jodie Brine (6 saves) and the Brown defense held strong at the end of the first quarter, successfully defending three Columbia penalty corners.
Brine recorded three saves in the second and third quarters to keep the Lions off the board and give Brown a 1-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Brown's defense kept the pressure on Columbia's offense in the fourth quarter, preventing a shot on goal from the Lions in the final 15 minutes, despite Columbia pulling Conomikes with five minutes to play for an extra attacker.
Brine recorded Brown's third straight shutout win, joining goalkeepers Calista Manuzza and Ella Edmonds in the shutout streak.
Brown returns Goldberger Family Field to host Lafayette (8-2, 2-1 Patriot) in non-conference action tomorrow at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will stream on ESPN+.
