PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown's Stacey Lukasheva tied the game in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, but Lafayette's Lineke Spaans scores 7:36 into overtime to give the Leopards the road win.
Lafayette improves to 10-2 (3-1 Patriot) with the non-conference victory while Brown drops to 6-6 (2-1 Ivy) with the loss.
"It was an unfortunate loss today given an outstanding effort," said head coach Jill Reeve. "We played some of our best hockey thus far this season. We have a lot to take forward into next week."
Alix Talkow gave Lafayette an early lead, knocking a loose ball past Brown goalkeeper Jodie Brine (3 saves) just 3:29 into the first quarter.
Brown's offense bounced back from the early Leopard goal, but Lafayette goalkeeper Hailey Abbott (4 saves) turned aside three shots in the remaining 11:31 of the opening quarter.
The second and third quarters finished scoreless as Lafayette took a 1-0 lead into the final 15 minutes. Brown successfully defended two Lafayette corners in the second quarter while the Leopards successfully defended two Bear corners in the third quarter.
The Bears tied the game less than a minute into the fourth quarter off a penalty corner. Lindsey Ross input the ball to Mikayla Walsh, who left the ball for Danielle van Rootselaar at the top of the circle. Van Rootselaar moved to her right and fired a shot into traffic, where Lukasheva tipped the shot to the top left corner for her first goal of the season.
Brine made a strong save on a shot from Lafayette's Audrey Sawers to preserve the 1-1 score halfway through the fourth and Brown's defense turned aside a Lafayette corner in the final minute of regulation to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Sawers hit Spaans with a through pass into the circle behind Brown's defense, and Spaans tipped the fast-moving ball past Brine for the victory.
Van Rootselaar recorded an assist in today's game to push her point streak to eight games. The senior has recorded at least a point in 10 of Brown's 12 games in 2021.
Brown finished the game with a 13-9 advantage in shots but both teams finished with five shots on goal. The Bears finished with an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.
Brown hosts Penn (4-6, 1-2 Ivy) on Saturday (Oct. 16) at Goldberger Family Field in Ivy League conference play. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
