WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown's offense broke through for four goals on the road to take a 4-0 non-conference win over Holy Cross Tuesday night at Hart Turf Field in Worcester.
Brown improves to 5-5 overall (1-1 Ivy) with its second straight win while Holy Cross drops to 4-6 overall (0-3 Patriot).
"I thought we played a solid 60 minutes and stuck to our game plan well," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I was proud of the way our team was patient within the game and we had some nice finish tonight."
The first quarter ended scoreless as both teams stood tall defensively. Both teams finished the frame with one shot, but neither found the net to test the goalkeepers.
Brown scored the night's first goal five minutes into the second quarter on Brown's fourth penalty corner of the period. Mikayla Walsh stopped the corner for Danielle van Rootselaar, and the duo went back-and-forth with two quick passes before van Rootselaar finished for her seventh goal of the season.
Holy Cross received its first penalty corner at the midpoint of the second quarter, but Brown's Ella Edmonds (2 saves), making her first career start in goal, turned aside a shot from Meggan Fourie.
Emma Rothkopf doubled the Bear lead with her first goal of the season halfway into the third quarter. Govan found Rothkopf in the circle with a pass, who blasted a shot past Holy Cross goalkeeper Brooke Ross (6 saves).
Brown's defense held the Crusaders to zero shots on goal through the remainder of the third quarter, successfully defending three consecutive Crusader penalty corners during the stretch.
Van Rootselaar scored her second of the game 1:28 into the fourth quarter on a penalty stroke to make it 3-0 Brown. After a yellow card was assessed to Crusader senior Caitlin Little, van Rootselaar was awarded a penalty stroke, where she beat Ross with a low shot to the left side of the net.
Walsh scored her first career goal less than a minute after van Rootselaar's penalty stroke goal, burying a feed from Govan to make it 4-0 Brown.
Brown finished the game with a 17-9 advantage in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on goal. On penalty corners, the Bears held a 9-5 advantage over the Crusaders.
Van Rootselaar tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the second quarter. She has recorded a point in six straight games and a goal in five of the last six games for the Bears.
Edmonds recorded her first career shutout in her first career start, marking Brown's second consecutive shutout victory.
Brown returns to Ivy League conference play on Saturday (Oct. 9) with a road game at Columbia (6-3, 0-2 Ivy). Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
