10/29/2021 4:36:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With five regular season meets in the rearview mirror, the men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at this weekend's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, which will be hosted at Princeton's West Windsor Fields. The day will get underway with the women's 6K championship race at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8K championship at noon. A full page of meet information can be found here. Live results are also available.
All runners who individually place 1-7 will earn First Team All-Ivy honors, while those finishing 8-14 will be named to the Second Team.
Brown's men enter the championship coming off a near-perfect performance at last weekend's Rothenberg Run, featuring the Bears and URI. Brown took first place at the meet, finishing with 16 points and taking four of the top five spots, and eight of the top 10 overall. Previously, Brown took third at the New England Championships, their highest finish since taking runner-up at the meet in 2016. Brown also finished first overall out of 10 teams at two meets to start the year at the Suffolk Short Course Classic at Boston's Franklin Park and the Nassaney Invitational at Bryant.
Senior Griffin McCauley has finished in Brown's top three in all five races this season, and has led the Bears' pack in each of the last three races, including a fifth place (out of 161) overall finish at the New England Championships, and a first-place finish at the Rothenberg Run. Brown has been strengthened by a talented group of underclassmen, led by freshman Miles Mullins, who has run in three races this season, and finished second in the Brown pack in each, including a sixth-place overall finish at the New England Championships, where he ran a 24:58.9 8K. Sophomore Evan Sherman has also put together a strong season to help lead the Bears, finishing first overall at both the Short Course Classic and Nassaney Invitational to begin the year. He placed third on the team and in the top 20 overall at New England's and fourth overall at Rothenberg.
The women's team is coming off a perfect score in its final tune-up before the championships at the Rothenberg Run, besting URI 15-50 in a meet that also featured several unattached runners. Brown finished fifth out of 23 teams at the New England Championships, its highest finish since winning the New England title back in 2009. The women began the season with back-to-back first place finishes at Suffolk and the Nassaney Invite.
Senior Emily Kompelien has led the Bears in three races this season, taking first place overall at Suffolk and Rothenberg, while finishing runner-up overall at the Nassaney. Senior Katherine Dokholyan has finished in the team's top two in all five races this season, taking second overall and fourth overall to start the season before leading the Bears' pack at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown and the New England Championships. In the squad's three 5K races this season, Dokholyan ran a season PR of 18:06.0 at Franklin Park in the Battle in Beantown. Sophomore Tevah Gevelber has a pair of second place team finishes and two third place team finishes this season.
After this weekend, Brown will race at the NCAA Regionals on Friday, Nov. 12 at Boston's Franklin Park.
