Waleffe's goal lifts men's soccer over Columbia

NEW YORK - The Brown men's soccer team opened Ivy League play with a 1-0 win over Columbia Saturday night. Derek Waleffe's team-leading fifth goal of the season lifted the Bears to victory over the Lions.
"I'm really proud of our players today," head coach Patrick Laughlin said. "They took to the week of training we had well, came in here and put a full performance in over 90 minutes. It was a great team win. I'm really proud of what the players accomplished in the game today in a tough environment here at Columbia."
Waleffe got on the end of a Chalrie Adams corner and headed in the would-be game-winner in the 39th minute of action.
On the day, Brown outshot Columbia 12-9 and earned nine corner kicks to the Lions' two. Max Waldau made four saves in goal for his first collegiate shutout.
The victory goes down as the Bears' first over Columbia since 2015.
Brown returns home next Saturday, Oct. 9 for an Ivy League matchup with Princeton at 7 p.m.
