PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman rowers Gabriel Mahler and Willem Stoop of the Brown men's crew program recently wrapped up competition at the European U23 Championships in Duisburg, Germany.
Stoop, who rowed for the Netherlands in the men's eight (M8+), finished fourth overall in the A final on Sunday. Mahler also competed in the men's eight event and helped the Czech Republic place fifth overall in the final. The two boats crossed in times of 5:50.78 and 5:55.27, respectively, while host Germany claimed first place in the event.
The 2020 European U23 Championships featured a record number of entries for the fourth year of the event, as 650 competitors entered the regatta from 32 member federations, an increase from 25 in 2019. This year's event was the first "water" competition for the current international rowing season, following the postponement of all major rowing events in 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic.
"I think I never went so deep, physically and mentally, during an international regatta," Stoop said. "I think I learned more from losing than I would from winning. I think the competition was harder than ever, because everyone realized that this was their only chance to win a race this season. After all, a great experience with great people, and I can't wait until the next event!"
"Although the 5th place was a little disappointing result, it was an incredibly exciting event," Mahler said. "I had a good opportunity to learn a bit about racing in an eight, in which I have never raced before, and which is very different than racing in a single. That will be definitely useful once I'll get to compete in the US. I think the level of competition, especially in some events, was very high. Looking at the list of competitors we had a strong feeling some of the national federations really put effort into making the strongest possible crews."
Mahler and Stoop will head to College Hill with a lofty list of international rowing experience. In addition to the recent U23 championships, Mahler previously competed at the 2017 and 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships, as well as the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. Stoop previously competed at the 2018 and 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships.
