PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Recent graduate Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) of the Brown women's track & field team has been named a conference honoree for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, one of two nominees from the Ivy League, the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced on Tuesday.
Â
From a program-record pool of 605 school nominees, 161 college athletes have been named conference-level nominees for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The nominees represent student-athletes from 21 different sports spanning all three NCAA divisions. Of those nominated, 59 nominees competed in Division I, 39 in Division II and 63 in Division III.
Â
The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female college athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
Â
Lewis is a two-time team captain, a six-time All-Ivy selection and a tremendous competitor who performed best when on the biggest stage. She was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 2020 Ivy League Indoor Championship as she scored 18 points in three events, highlighted by an individual title in the triple jump, which set the league, school, New England collegiate and facility record for the eighth-best mark in the nation heading into the NCAA Championship. Lewis earned Northeast Regional Female Field Athlete of the Year and NCAA All-American honors at the end of the season. She completed her career with nine all-time top-10 program records, between the indoor and outdoor seasons, including a trio of school records in the 60 meters (indoor), triple jump (indoor) and 4x100 meter relay.
Â
Lewis is one of two conference nominees from the Ivy League, along with Nia Akins (track & field) of Penn.
Â
The Woman of the Year Selection Committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will now choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division — from the conference-level nominees. The Top 30 honorees will be announced in September. From there, the selection committee will narrow the pool to three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2020 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.
