
Brown Mourns Loss of Former Men’s Hockey Head Coach, All-American Don Whiston ’51

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University athletics is saddened to learn of the passing of former men's hockey All-American and head coach Donald Whiston '51, who passed away on July 11, 2020.
An All-American goalie, Whiston helped Brown capture back-to-back league titles in 1950 and 1951, capped by a thrilling run to the finals of the 1951 National Championship. He was voted MVP of the 1951 National Tournament and twice earned First Team All-League accolades.
A goalie on the United States Olympic hockey team, Whiston earned a silver medal in Oslo, Norway, in 1952. He then returned to Brown as the head coach for three seasons from 1952 to 1955, finishing runner-up in the league during his final campaign. Whiston was inducted into the Brown Athletics Hall of Fame in 1971.
