PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics sophomore Mei Li Costa earned USAG All-America honors, senior Erin Howell gained USAG Senior All-Star Team accolades, and 10 Bears garnered USAG Scholar-Athlete laurels, USA Gymnastics announced on Monday.
Â
Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) gained First Team USAG All-America on bars, coming off a season in which she also gained First Team All-ECAC on bars and won the Ivy Classic title on bars. She matched her own school record with a 9.900 on bars this season.
Â
Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) gained a spot on the USAG Senior All-Star Team, following a year in which she earned Second Team All-Ivy Classic on floor alongside season-high scores of 9.850 on bars and 9.725 on floor.
Â
The Bears' 10 USAG Scholar-Athletes included freshman Abby Contello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Costa, junior Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah), junior Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio), Howell, freshman Lauren Lazaro (Wellesley, Mass.), freshman Jasmine Lee (Bremerton, Wash.), sophomore Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.), freshman Carolanne Van Zandt (Covington, La.), and junior Caroline Warren (Pawleys Island, S.C.).
Â
While All-American selections are typically based on results from the USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Championships, given the truncated conclusion to the 2020 season, this year's honorees were determined based on cumulative performance results through week ten of the regular season. The top-ten finishers in each event and the top-eight all-around gymnasts were named First-Team All-Americans. The next finisher(s) in each event and next two all-around athletes were selected to the Second Team.
Â
In appreciation of this year's senior athletes who saw their final season cut short, USA Gymnastics named the inaugural USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate Nationals Senior All-Star Team comprised of the top-ten seniors on each event.
Â
To earn USAG Scholar-Athlete honors gymnasts must be in their second, third or fourth years of eligibility and possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 in the previous two semesters or three quarters on a 4.0 scale.
