ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's track & field team is currently in fifth place with 16 points after the first day of the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Championships at Cornell's Barton Hall.
"Good first day," said head coach Tim Springfield. "The jumpers and throwers got us on the board with some very strong performances. We had a number of athletes from all event groups outperform their seeds to get into finals, and we are well positioned for tomorrow."
Junior Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) defended her title in the long jump as she won the Ivy indoor championship for the second-straight season. Uche topped the field with a winning leap of 20-5.75 on her second attempt, just missing her own school record, for fifth-best all-time in meet history.
Teammate Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) was fourth in the long jump at 19-6.75 for fourth all-time in program history. She moved up to fourth in her fifth attempt to give the Bears 14 total points in the event.
Rookie Lily Dumas (Holden, Mass.) placed fifth overall in the pentathlon with 3,377 total points. She moved up from sixth to fifth in the final event with a five-second personal-best time of 2:31.99 in the 800 meters.
Jae Crawford (Orlando, Fla.) was seventh in the weight throw with a two-foot personal-record of 53-2.25.
Lewis and Syndey Scott (Charlotte, N.C.) both advanced to the final of the 60 meters after placing fourth and ninth, respectively, in the prelims. Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.) was second in the 400-meter prelims at 55.85 and May Stern (Providence, N.C.) took fourth at 56.22 as the duo advanced to Sunday's final.
