Costa Wins Ivy Vault, Bars Titles, Gymnastics Scores 193.050 at Ivy Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore Mei Li Costa won Ivy titles on vault and bars as Brown University gymnastics scored a season-high 193.050 to place third at the 2020 Ivy Classic, competing against Cornell, Penn, and Yale at the Big Red's Newman Arena on Sunday.

"I am so proud of our team's performance today!" Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "They competed like champions and earned a season high. Mei winning the Ivy champion title on both vault and bars was an incredible victory for our whole team. They had each other's back the entire meet and finished strong."

Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) defended her vault title from 2019 and led a group of six Brown student-athletes that totaled nine All-Ivy Classic honors. Costa captured First Team on vault and bars in addition to Second Team on beam, increasing her career total to five All-Ivy Classic honors.

Freshman Lauren Lazaro (Wellesley, Mass.) collected Second Team All-Ivy Classic on both beam and floor while junior Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) gained Second Team All-Ivy Classic on vault, capturing All-Ivy Classic on the event for the third straight year.

Junior Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) gained Second Team on beam for her second career All-Ivy Classic honor, senior Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) garnered Second Team on floor, and freshman Jasmine Lee (Bremerton, Wash.) took Second Team in the all-around.

In the team standings, Penn won the meet with a 194.850, Yale came in second with a 193.800, Brown finished third with a season-high 193.050, and Cornell took fourth with a 192.275. The Bears eclipsed the 193 mark for the first time this season.

As a team, Brown scored a season-high 48.450 on vault, 47.800 on bars, 48.700 on beam, and a 48.100 on floor.

Costa won the Ivy title on vault for the second straight year with a career-high 9.850 while Gardner placed fourth in the event with a 9.775, tying her season high. Lazaro followed with a 9.625 while freshmen Ella Poley (Newton, Mass.) and Abby Contello (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) each scored a 9.600, marking a career high for both.

Costa claimed the Ivy bars title with a 9.850 and now has three Ivy titles in her career. Sophomore Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) posted a 9.550, Hansen and Howell each notched a 9.475, and Poley added a 9.450.

On beam, Lazaro led Brown with a career-best 9.825 for fourth place, Costa took fifth with a 9.800, and Hansen claimed sixth with a 9.775 as all three earned All-Ivy Classic accolades. Petrillo tallied a 9.725 while junior Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) compiled a 9.575.

Lazaro and Howell paced the Bears on floor with each scoring a 9.700 to tie for sixth place. Domonoske, Gardner, and Lee scored a 9.625, 9.600, and 9.475 respectively.

In the all-around, Lee finished in fourth place with a 37.400.

Next, Brown competes at Southern Connecticut State with Bridgeport, Rhode Island College, and West Chester on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 2:00 p.m.
