
Phillips Homers, Baseball Edged by Sacred Heart, 2-1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) homered in the seventh inning to pull the Brown baseball team within one run, but the Bears were edged by Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Friday afternoon to open a four-game weekend on the campus of Wake Forest.

Brown (1-4) and Sacred Heart (2-3) kicked off the four-game, round-robin weekend in North Carolina that also includes La Salle and host Wake Forest.

Senior Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a double. Sacred Heart outhit the Bears, 8-5, and scored on a pair of solo home runs.

Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) was handed the loss behind two runs allowed over six innings with five strikeouts. Ryan LaMay pitched seven innings of one-run ball to pick up the win and Matt Aufiero earned a six-out save.

The two teams had two hits apiece through two innings before Justin Jordan hit a leadoff solo shot in the bottom of the third for the first run of the game. Sam Mongelli tacked on another solo homer in the sixth for the two-run advantage.

Phillips put the Bears on the board in the top of the seventh when he hit a solo home run to left center for his first homer of the season. Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) provided two innings of one-hit relief work out of the bullpen, but the Pioneers kept Brown off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Brown will play No. 24 Wake Forest in a doubleheader on Saturday.
