
Strong Second Half Propels Women’s Lacrosse Past Siena, 18-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team outscored Siena 12-3 in the second half en route to a 18-8 victory on Tuesday evening at the Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Sophomore Sophia DeRosa (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) led the second half charge with a career-high six goals, all scored in the second frame.
After scoring the game's first goal, Siena (0-1) didn't hold a lead again until 18:21 of the second half on a free-position goal by Julia Pelcher for an 8-7 edge. Brown (2-0) then proceeded to close out the contest with 11 unanswered goals for the win.
"I am proud of our effort and the way we finished the game," said head coach Keely McDonald. "We got better throughout the game and I'm excited to make some improvements this week at practice."
In addition to DeRosa, the Bears were led by sophomore Claire Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y.) who netted a career-high four goals. Freshman Nathalie Ahn (Hopkinton, Mass.), junior Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) and senior KC Williams (Duxbury, Mass.) all scored two goals apiece, with Ahn registering her first collegiate goals. Junior Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (1G, 2A) and sophomore Alaina Parisella (Chatham, N.J.) (1G, 1A) also added multipoint efforts. Defensively, sophomore Erin Tucker (Centerport, N.Y.) contributed five saves.
After the Saints scored the first goal of the evening, Jeschke (28:04, free position) and Ahn (27:43) recorded back-to-back goals to put the Bears on top 3-1. After the game was tied for the third time at 4-4, Williams (free position) and Jeschke found the back of the net for a 6-4 advantage. Siena closed the opening stanza with a goal with 26 seconds remaining.
Siena had a two-player advantage at 18:03 on two yellow cards but Brown fought off the penalties without surrendering a score. The Bears outshot Siena 12-9 in the first while draw controls were tied at six apiece. Brown went 2-for-2 on free-position shots while Siena was 2-for-4.
After a Jeschke goal to open the second, the Saints would score three-consecutive to take an 8-7 lead at 18:21. The Bears would then close out the half on a tear, scoring 10 straight, starting with a goal from Parisella at 17:02 while receiving six scores from DeRosa (12:54, 11:00, 8:26, 5:09, 3:14, 2:06), including two on the free position.
The Bears were able to keep up the scoring with the help of a 12-4 advantage on draw controls while also outshooting the Saints by a 23-7 margin.
Overall, Brown held a 35-16 lead in shots and was 4-for-7 on free positions, going 2-for-5 in the second. Siena was 3-for-6 on free positions and went 1-for-2 in the second.
Siena was led by Kaitlyn Dowsett who had two goals and one assist while Annie Brennan added two scores. Ally Mervine made 11 stops in net for the Saints.
With their points today, Fowler moves past Mercedes Boesch '78 for ninth all-time at Brown in career assists (38) while Mosenthal passes Phoebe Koch '98 to move into eighth for career points (113-18-131).
The Bears will next travel to No. 15 Boston College on Tuesday, Feb. 25 for a 3:00 p.m. game on ACC Network Extra.
