
Women’s Lacrosse Hosts Siena in Home Opener on Tuesday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team will host Siena for its 2020 home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday's contest will be the team's first at the newly constructed Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The men's team will play prior at 12:30 p.m. (vs. Sacred Heart) with free admission for both contests.

Brown defeated Bryant, 12-7, for the Ocean State Cup in its season opener on Saturday at Beirne Stadium. The Bulldogs scored the game's first goal but the Bears answered with four-straight and held the lead the rest of the way for their first win of the year. Junior Risa Mosenthal led Brown with five goals and an assist while six other Bears recorded a goal, including two from freshman Mia Mascone. Sophomore Erin Tucker turned away six shots in net, three in each half, while junior Allison Lanzone and sophomore Jordan Torres each caused two turnovers for the defense.
MOSENTHAL NAMED TO TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
Junior attack Risa Mosenthal was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List, announced by the organization on Thursday, Feb. 13. A First Team All-Ivy selection in 2019, Mosenthal has led the Bears in scoring for two-straight seasons and registered 59 points on 51 goals and eight assists a year ago. She broke the school record for goals in a game with nine against Fresno State (Mar. 31), which also tied the Ivy League record. Mosenthal led the conference in goals per game (3.64) and was sixth in points per game (4.21) last season. All-time, her 106 career goals are already fifth best at Brown in just two seasons while her 51 goals in 2019 are third best for a season on College Hill. As a freshman, Mosenthal was named Second Team All-Ivy and earned a spot on the Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team while leading the Bears in points (64) and goals (55). Her 55 goals were second best all-time at Brown for a season while her 64 points are third highest. The Tewaaraton Award is given annually to the most outstanding American college lacrosse player. The 20th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held May 28, 2020 at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.
CENTER FOR LACROSSE AND SOCCER
On Tuesday, Brown will unveil its new Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field, a premier facility for lacrosse and soccer that will enhance both the team and game day experience and replaces the existing press box and stands in the same location. The approximately 22,500 square foot building has a grandstand to accommodate 1,250 people, as well as concessions and restrooms located on the concourse level. The building will have event space for game-day hosting and team gatherings, new staff and team locker rooms, a training room, and players will have direct access to the field through a tunnel.

Brown went 8-7 overall in 2019 and finished tied for fourth with Cornell in the Ivy League standings with a 4-3 conference mark. A total of six Bears earned All-Ivy honors with Risa Mosenthal leading the group with First Team accolades. Mason Warble made the Second Team while Erin Schafer and Erin Tucker were picked Honorable Mention for the returning team members. Warble was also selected to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region Second Team after leading the Bears in caused turnovers (32) and ground balls (41). Her 32 caused turnovers are tied for fourth best in a season at Brown while her 41 ground balls are 15th. Warble ranked second in the conference in caused turnovers per game (2.13) and was fifth in ground balls per game (2.73).

The Bears return six of their top seven scorers from last season, with junior Risa Mosenthal leading the squad with 51 goals and eight assists for 59 points a year ago. Junior Maggie Fowler (36-7-43), sophomore Claire Jeschke (16-8-24), sophomore Sophia DeRosa (14-7-21), senior KC Williams (18-1-19) and sophomore Alaina Parisella (14-2-16) also return.

Sophomore Erin Tucker returns between the pipes after earning Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors in 2019 while starting all 15 games in her rookie campaign. Tucker recorded an 11.54 goals-against average and a .428 save percentage and made double digit saves in eight games. She tallied a collegiate best 13 saves at Dartmouth and also added a career high six ground balls versus the Big Green. Junior Cait Barrett also returns after appearing in five games last season.
CHASING CAREER MARKS
A 2019 First Team All-Ivy selection, junior Risa Mosenthal is chasing multiple program records. The Campton, N.H. native has recorded 111 goals and 18 assists for 129 points in just two years. Her 111 goals are third-best at Brown while her 51 goals scored in 2019 are third highest for a season. She broke the school mark for goals in a game with nine against Fresno State on March 31, 2019, which also tied the Ivy League record. Having recorded a point in 30 games played, Mosenthal is chasing the record for consecutive games with a point, which is 40, set by Lauren Becker '87.
BEARS' DEFENSE AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
Brown ranked 11th in the country in 2019 caused turnovers per game, averaging 11.33. Junior Mason Warble led the defense with 32 caused turnovers while sophomore Erin Schafer (22) and senior Emily Fyrer (20) forced 20 or more turnovers.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Siena was picked third in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll after finishing second in the conference last season while four Saints earned Preseason All-MAAC Team recognition. Kerry Gerety and Nicole McNeely both led the Saints in scoring a year ago with the top two points seasons in program history. Gerety was an All-MAAC First Team selection last spring, while McNeely earned Second Team accolades. Also named on the Preseason All-MAAC team were Therese Pitman and Annie Brennan, who both earned All-MAAC honors last year with Pitman landing First Team honors and Brennan a Second Team selection.

Tuesday's matchup will be the first meeting all-time between the two schools.

Princeton was predicted to finish first with 13 first-place votes and 125 points while Penn followed in second with three first-place votes and 112 points. Dartmouth (92 points) and Cornell (79 points) rounded out the top four while Harvard (48 points), Yale (36 points) and Columbia (27 points) finished sixth through eighth.

The 2020 Ivy League Women's Lacrosse Tournament will be held at the site of the top seed on May 1 and 3 with the top four teams advancing to postseason play.

Brown added eight players to its 2020 roster. The freshmen include: attack Nathalie Ahn, midfielder Essie Atherton, midfielder Lydia Bongiorno, attack Lily Hagerup, midfielder Emmie Lau, midfielder Mia Mascone, attack Gabby Sartori and defender Katie Silver.

The Ivy League - a consistent factor in the national women's lacrosse landscape - boasts a trio of ranked teams entering the 2020 season. No. 6 Princeton, No. 12 Penn and No. 22 Dartmouth were listed in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Preseason Poll.
