CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) converted a penalty shot and Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 30 saves as the Brown men's hockey team skated to a tie with No. 18 Harvard, 1-1, in ECAC action Saturday at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Brown (6-17-2, 6-10-2) picked up a point in conference play, while Harvard moved to 11-8-6, 9-4-5.
"I thought we competed very hard," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "Harvard is a very good team skill wise, and I thought we limited their opportunities. I don't think they had a lot of looks, and the fact that we killed a five-minute major was outstanding. If we continue to play like we did for large stretches in that game, we'll be fine."
Weberg provided the lone goal for Brown as he converted the program's first penalty shot since the 2013-14 season. Brown then kept the Crimson's top-ranked power play off the board during a five-minute major halfway through the third period.
Nieto made five stops in overtime to reach the 30-save mark for the sixth time this season. Mitchell Gibson had 26 saves for the Crimson.
Jack Rathbone gave the Crimson an early lead as he scored 36 seconds into the contest, beating Nieto with a one timer from the left circle. Brown killed the only penalty of the period to maintain a one-goal deficit.
Weberg was awarded a penalty shot 5:06 into the second period after he was tripped up on a breakaway, and he buried the attempt for his first goal of the season to even the score, 1-1.
Harvard had a 2-on-1 opportunity with two minutes left in the middle period, but Nieto came up with a big stop to deny Henry Bowlby, as the two teams remained tied at the second intermission. Brown and Harvard were even at 16 shots apiece after 40 minutes.
After Brown was called for a five-minute major midway through the third period, the Bears held the Crimson power play off the board, which entered the night ranked first in the nation at 31.4 percent. The two teams skated 4-on-4 during the final two minutes of regulation to force extra time. Harvard held a slight edge in shots, 5-4, in a scoreless overtime period.
Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and Weberg paced the Bears with four shots apiece.
Brown will host Colgate and Cornell next weekend to round out the regular season home schedule.
