Men’s Lacrosse Opens Its 70th Season At Home Against Quinnipiac on Saturday

Game originally scheduled on the road, but moved to Brown due to field conditions in Hamden, Conn.
Providence, R.I. – Brown opens its 70th season of intercollegiate lacrosse at home, facing Quinnipiac on Saturday, February 15 at Stevenson-Pincince Field, starting at 12:00 noon. The game was originally scheduled at Quinnipiac, but changed to the Brown campus due to unplayable field conditions in Hamden, Conn. There is no admission charge for Saturday's game.
With the construction of Brown's new Center for Lacrosse and Soccer not fully completed, the main grandstand at Stevenson-Pincince Field has not yet opened. Seating for the game will be available on the far side of the field, across from the team benches and new building.
Brown's new facility is expected to available, as expected, for Tuesday's (2/18) game against Sacred Heart (12:30 pm).
The Bears:Brown (0-0) is coming off a 7-9 season and its fifth straight appearance in the Ivy League Tournament. The Bears return all four of their 2019 All-Ivy selections return, including senior goalie Phil Goss, junior middies George Grell and Ryan Aughavin and sophomore defenseman Andrew Geppert, who each earned Second Team All-Ivy honors.
The Bobcats: Quinnipiac (0-2) will be playing its third game of the season after losses to Rutgers (20-9) and UMass Lowell (10-9). The Bobcats posted a 9-7 record in 2019 and advanced to the MAAC title game.
Center for Lacrosse and Soccer: On February 18, Brown opens its home season against Sacred Heart (12:30 pm) and will unveil its new Center for Lacrosse and Soccer at Stevenson-Pincince Field, a premier facility for lacrosse and soccer that will enhance both the team and game day experience and replaces the existing press box and stands in the same location. The approximately 22,500 square foot building has a grandstand to accommodate 1,250 people, as well as concessions and restrooms located on a concourse level. The building will have event space for game-day hosting and team gatherings, new staff and team locker rooms, a training room, and players will have direct access to the field through a tunnel.
Brown-Quinnipiac – Series Record: Brown and Quinnipiac have met 11 times, dating back to 2005, with the Bears holding a 9-2 series advantage. Last year, Luke McCaleb registered a career high eight points with three goals and five assists to lead the Bears to a 20-7 win in Providence. In 2018, Quinnipiac earned a 12-11 overtime win over the Bears in Hamden, CT.
Bear Facts: Senior attackman Luke McCaleb is Brown's 13th all-time leading career scorer with 153 points (86 goals, 67 assists)…Senior All-American goalie Phil Goss has made 586 career saves, fifth best in Brown lacrosse history…Brown returns 88-percent of its goals (170/193) from a year ago and 93-percent of its assists (108/115) from 2019.
Midfield Unit:Junior George Grell led the Bears' midfield with 46 points, scoring 24 goals and handing out 22 assists. Junior Ryan Aughavin was Brown's second leading goal scorer (30), while adding 13 assists. Sophomore Reed Moshyedi (3 goals, 2 assists), sophomore Colby Gendron (2 goals), sophomore Nolen Rockefeller and freshman Devon McLane will also see playing time.
McCaleb – Top 25 All-Time Scorer: Brown attackman Luke McCaleb '20 led the Bears with 59 points (36 goals, 23 assists) last year, and ranks 13th among Brown's Top 25 All-Time Scorers with 153 career points (86 goals, 67 assists). His 35 ground ball in 2019 also led all field players. McCaleb scored four goals and added an assist in Brown's win over Princeton. McCaleb netted a career high five goals in the Bears' overtime win over UMBC and followed that up with a hat-trick vs. #12 Virginia. McCaleb got off to a great start to the season, scoring three goals and handing out five assists for a career high eight points vs. Quinnipiac, and added two goals and an assist vs. Stony Brook.

Defensive Unit:Coach Mike Daly's defensive unit is led by a pair of sophomores, Second Team All-Ivy Andrew Geppert, who started Brown's last 10 games a year ago, and Luke Gaydos, who earned starting roles in the Bears' final six games. Kniffin Steps Up On Attack: Jack Kniffin '20 earned a starting role in Brown's last eight games in 2019, scoring 17 goals in those games and 23 goals for the season. Last year, Kniffin registered six points in Brown's win over Bryant with four goals and two assists and had four goals and handed out an assist vs. Yale.

His 586 career saves rank fifth in the Brown record book. A First Team All-Ivy choice in 2018 Goss made 13.13 saves per game to rank second nationally. He also ranked 15th in the nation and second in the Ivy League in save percentage (.538). Facing-Off:Brown returns its top two face-off specialists with Jason Simaan '20 and Matt McShea '21 splitting duties in the face-off x. Simaan led the Bears with 66 ground balls and captured 117-of-218 (537) face-offs last year. He had a career performance vs. Dartmouth, winning 17-of-19 face-offs, picking up 12 ground balls and handing out an assist. McShea, who had 51 ground balls, won 100-of-205 face-offs last season. He had a successful outing vs. UMBC, capturing 6-of-8 face-offs and came back by winning 11-of-23 face-offs vs. Virginia. Freshman Matt Gunty may also see action in the face-off x.

Head Coach Mike Daly:Fourth-year head Brown lacrosse coach Mike Daly posted a 10-6 overall record in his initial season on College Hill and has brought the Bears to the Ivy League Tournament in each of his three seasons at Brown, including the finals in 2017. He came to Brown after guiding the Tufts University men's lacrosse program to three NCAA National Championship titles while boasting the nation's highest scoring offense. Daly, the sixth Brown men's lacrosse coach since 1963, posted a record of 244-83 in 18 seasons as head coach at Tufts, with nine NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NESCAC titles. His Tufts teams won national championships in 2010, 2014 and 2015. Tufts led the nation in scoring in 2016 with 402 goals in 23 games for a 17.48 per game average. The Jumbos won their seventh consecutive NESCAC title and finished the year with a 20-3 record, falling in the National Championship game. Daly is among the top 10 active coaches for winning percentage and is in the top 20 for victories. A two time USILA F. Morris Touchstone National Coach of the Year (2010 and 2014), Daly's teams have won 20 or more games four times and made five appearances in the National Championship game. Daly oversaw a prolific Tufts offense that scored 423 goals in 2014 to set an NCAA record for a single season for all divisions.
