Costa Ties Bars Record, Gymnastics Scores Season-High 191.875 in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Mei Li Costa tied her own school record with a 9.900 on bars as Brown University gymnastics placed second with a season-high 191.875 in its home opener against the University of Bridgeport and Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

"It's nice to see the whole team deliver and for us to continue to improve every week," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "It's truly a team effort. This was a great way for us to perform in our home opener in front of all of our fans and supporters."

Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) took first place on bars with her career-high 9.900 and also came in third on vault with a season-best 9.700.

Sophomore Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) placed second in the all-around standings with a season-high 38.275, and freshman Lauren Lazaro (Wellesley, Mass.) finished in second place on floor with a personal-best 9.750.

In the team standings, Brown (191.875) topped RIC (181.650) while Bridgeport won the meet with a 193.750.

As a team, Brown scored season highs on vault (47.950), bars (48.600), and floor (48.050), while adding a 47.275 on beam.

Costa paced Brown on vault with her season-high 9.700 for third place while junior Alyssa Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) supported her with a 9.675. Lazaro and fellow freshmen Jasmine Lee (Bremerton, Wash.) and Ella Poley (Newton, Mass.) all tallied personal bests with a 9.650, 9.475, and 9.450 respectively.

On bars, Costa matched her own school record with a 9.900 for first place. Lee and Petrillo each registered a season-best 9.725 to tie for fourth place. Junior Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Gardner each notched a season high with a 9.700 and 9.550 apiece.

Petrillo led the Bears on beam, tying her career high with a 9.700 for fourth place while junior Rose Domonoske (Park City, Utah) followed her with a season-best 9.575. Costa, sophomore Abby Walsh (White Lake, Mich.), and Lazaro scored a 9.475, 9.325, and 9.200 respectively.

On floor, Lazaro tallied a personal-best 9.750 for second place while senior Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) posted a career-high 9.725 for fourth place. Gardner notched a 9.575, Petrillo added a season-high 9.550, and Walsh tacked on a season-best 9.450.

Next, Brown competes at Bridgeport with Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday, February 2 at 1:00 p.m.
