PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Cameron Daly (Meredith, N.H.) broke a school record in the 5,000 meters as the Brown men's and women's track & field teams competed at the BU Terrier Invitational and the Columbia Challenge over the weekend.
Â
Boston University Terrier Invitational
Daly posted a second-place overall performance out of 99 competitors in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in a record-breaking time of 14:00.31, as he broke the previous school record of 14:07.60 set by Jeff Gaudette '05 in 2005. Daly moved up over the course of the race and challenged Syracuse's Joe Dragon during final 400 meters, who held on for the win at 13:59.49.
Â
"Cam ran a great race--he was poised and competed exceptionally well," said head coach Tim Springfield. "Cam's workouts have been going well, but to run this fast in his first race of the season is very exciting. He's worked hard for four years and I'm really proud of his effort tonight."
Â
Sophomore Calvin Perkins (Belmont, Mass.) was sixth out of 63 runners in the 500 meters with a time of 1:03.69.
Â
Columbia Challenge
Brown racked up five top-10 program performances at The Armory as the Bears went head-to-head against elite programs at the competitive Columbia Challenge.
Â
"Any time you travel down to The Armory in New York you expect great competition at such a great facility," said assistant coach Ken Hunt. "This year's Columbia Challenge Invitational was no exception. With teams from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, PAC-12, and Ivy League, not only did the athletes get two days of stellar competition, they also got to step on the track, in the circle, and on the runway with the country's best. I would argue finishing anywhere in the top ten is a noteworthy accomplishment."
Â
Ijeoma Uche (Lawrenceville, Ga.) was runner-up in the long jump at 19-7.5 and Zion Lewis (Canton, Ga.) added a ninth-place finish with a personal-best indoor mark of 18-7. Lewis also took second in the triple jump with a leap of 42-0. Felicia Renelus (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was fifth in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 39-11.5 for eighth all-time at Brown, while Lauren Stern (Mahwah, N.J.) tied her personal best of 39-3.75 for sixth at the meet and ninth in the record books.
Â
Kennedy Waite (Woodland Hills, Calif.) set a pair of personal bests in the 60 meters (7.71) and 200 meters (25.27), as her time in the 60 was eighth all-time at Brown. Kennedy Kerr (West Hempstead, N.Y.) just missed a top-10 record in the 200 with a personal-best time of 24.88, while Gracie Whelan (Charlotte, N.C.) set a PR in the event at 24.97. May Stern (Providence, R.I.) was eighth in the 400 meters at 55.89.
Â
The 4x400 relay team of Maddie Frey (Waukesha, Wis.), Stern, Whelan and Hanna Barakat (Los Angeles, Calif.) turned in a sixth-place finish at 3:46.04 for fifth all-time in program history.
Â
On the men's side, senior Michael Coppolino (Cumberland, R.I.) was fourth in the weight throw at 61-2.25, while Kegan Schroeter (Narragansett, R.I.) took sixth at 59-11 for ninth all-time in the record books. Nigel Despinasse (Baton Rouge, La.) took eighth in the shot put at 53-8.25.
Â
Rookie Sidarth Raman (Fremont, Calif.) was seventh in the high jump with a cleared height of 6-4.75 and also set a PR in the long jump at 22-1.5.
Â
"We are a few weeks out from the Heptagonal Indoor Championships at Cornell," added Hunt. "Everyone fully understands that meets like this and the ones ahead will help us fine tune in preparation for that competition."

Brown will head to the New England Championships in Boston next weekend.
