
Wrestling Tops Binghamton, 19-14, Falls to No. 22 Cornell, 36-4, in EIWA Duals

VESTAL and ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown University wrestling topped Binghamton University, 19-14, and fell to No. 22 Cornell University, 36-4, in a pair of EIWA duals on Saturday at West Gymnasium and Friedman Wrestling Center respectively.

The Bears (1-5, 1-4 EIWA, 0-1 Ivy) gained leads of 7-0 and 13-3 on their way to the win over the Bearcats (2-8, 1-6 EIWA) in their first dual of the day before dropping the decision in their Ivy League opener to the Big Red (8-5, 3-1 EIWA, 3-0 Ivy) – ranked No. 22 in Intermat's Dual Meet Rankings – who have won 17 straight Ivy titles and 91 straight Ivy duals.

"We competed hard in both duals," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "I was proud of the way we wrestled against Binghamton with a lot of guys finding ways to win close matches. We're looking forward to getting a chance to wrestle in front of our home fans next weekend in our first home duals of the year."

Junior 197-pounder Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.) posted two wins on the day, notching his 13th and 14th victories of the season, including his second major decision of the year. Junior Charlie Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) registered his team-high fourth major decision of the season against Binghamton.

Next, Brown competes at the Johnson & Wales Wildcat Open tomorrow – Sunday, January 26 – before hosting a pair of EIWA and Ivy duals on Saturday, February 1 against Penn (12:00 p.m.) and Princeton (2:00 p.m.) in the Bears' 2019-20 home debut.

The Bears jumped out to leads of 7-0 after the first two bouts and 13-3 at the halfway point of the dual before using two wins in the second half of the meet to stymie a comeback bid from the host Bearcats.

Faber (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) posted his 10th win of the season and his team-high fourth major decision of the year.

Senior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.), junior Nino Bastianelli (Marysville, Mich.), sophomore Jack Bokina (Mattituck, N.Y.), and freshman Ricky Cabanillas (Whippany, N.J.) all won bouts via decisions. Cabanillas notched his team-best 16th win of the year, Bastianelli and Bokina each posted his 13th win, and Keeley registered his eighth victory of the season.

Keeley opened the dual with an 8-4 win over Carson Sauriol at 125 pounds, and Faber followed with a 15-6 major decision over Tomasso Frezza at 133 pounds, making the team score 7-0.

After Binghamton took a 6-2 win at 141 pounds, Cabanillas and Bokina responded with back-to-back wins, extending the team lead to 13-3. Cabanillas notched a 6-4 win over Matt Swanson at 149 pounds prior to Bokina topping Chris Barker, 4-0, at 157 pounds.

Wilson and Bastianelli each answered Bearcat wins in the back half of the dual. Wilson earned a 6-4, sudden-victory win over Alex Melikian, making the team score 16-6 in favor of Brown, and Bastianelli bested Sam DePrez, 8-6, at 197 pounds, making the team score 19-10 and sealing the victory for the Bears.
