SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Alyssa Gardner and sophomore Mei Li Costa won the vault and bars titles respectively as Brown University gymnastics scored a 189.275 on Sunday afternoon in its season opener at Blake Arena in a quad meet at Springfield College with Southern Connecticut and Yale.

"I'm very proud of the team," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "We started the competition strong today, and while we had a few first-meet jitters, we also showed a lot of potential."

Gardner (Angola, N.Y.) captured the vault title with a 9.775 while Costa (Lawrenceville, N.J.) claimed the bars title with a 9.825. In the all-around standings, freshman Jasmine Lee (Bremerton, Wash.) came in third with a 37.500 in her collegiate debut, and sophomore Sophia Petrillo (Stoneham, Mass.) placed fifth with a 36.750.

In the team standings, Yale came in first with a 191.525, Southern Connecticut placed second with a 189.475, Brown finished third with a 189.275, and Springfield placed fourth with a 182.300.

As a team, Brown scored a 47.250 on vault, 48.200 on bars, 45.950 on beam, and a 47.875 on floor.

On vault, Gardner led the Bears with her first-place 9.775 while freshman Lauren Lazaro (Wellesley, Mass.) supported her with a 9.500. Lee, freshman Ella Poley (Newton, Mass.), and Petrillo tallied a 9.375, 9.350, and 9.250 respectively.

Costa paced Brown on bars with first-place 9.825, and Petrillo took fifth place with a 9.675. Junior Emma Hansen (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched a 9.625, senior Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) registered a 9.550, and Lee tallied a 9.525.

On beam, Costa scored a 9.575 for sixth place while Lazaro recorded a 9.375. Hansen notched a 9.325, and Lee notched a 9.025.

Howell led Brown on floor with a 9.625 while Lazaro and Gardner each scored a 9.600. Lee and Petrillo posted a 9.575 and 9.475 respectively.

Next, Brown competes at Bridgeport with Rhode Island College and Yale on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 1:00 p.m. before hosting Bridgeport and RIC in the Bears' home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1:00 p.m.
