PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by St. Lawrence, 4-0, in its first action of 2020 on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Saints benefited from two power-play goals in the contest, with both tallies coming in the second period.
Senior Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) provided many highlight saves for the Bears (1-12-1, 1-7-1 ECAC) throughout the matchup and finished with 43 stops, her fourth game of the season with 40 or more saves.
"I'm disappointed that we didn't start where we left off after first semester, said head coach Carisa Zaban Wahlig. "The beginning of the game was our best effort, but our level of play kept dropping each period. I understand it's the first game back after break and things can be a bit rusty, so hopefully we can bounce back tomorrow."
Julia Gosling got things going for the Saints (8-7-5, 3-3-2 ECAC) in the first period with a score at 16:20 for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead. The Bears controlled possession for most of the opening period despite the shot advantage going to the Saints, 16-5.
Gosling added her second of the day at 9:38 of the second on the power play while Brittney Gout later added another special team's score at 17:30 for a 3-0 lead. The Saints converted on two of their three chances on the power play while Brown was shutout (0-for-3) while having a 5-on-3 opportunity at 10:14.
Gout added her second tally at 12:40 of the third period to complete the scoring. St. Lawrence finished 2-for-5 on the night on the power-play while the Bears were 0-for-3.
Isaac concluded the contest with 43 saves, 17 coming in the second period. St. Lawrence received five saves from both Caitlin Whitehead and Jaimie Rainville in the first and second period, respectively, while Lucy Morgan closed out the third with three stops.
Sophomore Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) led Brown's offensive effort with four shots on goal while sophomore Lizzy Gross (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Darby Melia (Marshfield, Mass.) each added two.
Brown will next close out the weekend on home ice against No. 5/6 Clarkson tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 11) at 3:00 p.m.
